About Soaps

Soap is probably the most basic item that people have in their personal care stash. It’s a product that has been around for centuries, and even today, it remains as one of the most important items we use for cleansing and general hygiene.

Can’t get enough of the delicious scent of your coffee beauty bar or the zesty goodness of your citrus soap? Read these interesting facts about soap and you’re sure to love your bath-time bestie even more!

  1. Real soaps are produced by processing vegetable or animal-based oils and fats with an alkaline solution. This process is known as saponification.

  2. The earliest known soap-like material was produced in Babylon around 4,800 years ago.

  3. In the ancient times, soap was first used to clean or treat everyday items such as textiles and clothes. Later on, it was used by people as a cleanser for the body. The Romans were widely known for using soap as part of their bathing regimen. Their soap-making techniques also spread throughout the known world.

  4. The World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Bank all actively promote handwashing with soap as the most cost-effective way to prevent the spread of harmful diseases.

  5. The non-profit organization Global Soap estimates that 1.4 million deaths each year can be prevented by handwashing with soap.

  6. Glycerin soaps are soaps that contain glycerin, a sweet, odorless, and non-toxic compound derived from vegetable or animal fat. It is known for its smoothing, lubricating, and moisturizing properties. Nowadays, many industrially produced soaps don’t contain glycerin anymore because it is often separated from the mixture to be resold to other industries, including the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and food production sectors. That is why soaps with glycerin are somewhat considered special.
