About Body Lotion & Serums

To complete your arsenal of organic beauty products, you’ll need to have a moisturizer. Thankfully, there’s now a wide range of all-natural lotions and serums now available in the market. To help you choose, here are 5 tips:

  1. For imported organic brands, check if they signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. Also check they have the USDA Organic seal. The Compact is a list of companies who support the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and manufacture safer personal care products. Meanwhile, products with the USDA Organic seal complies with the US Department of Agriculture’s regulations for organic claim. Those who use this seal without the USDA’s approval can be prosecuted and fined.

  2. Know which ingredients to avoid. Since the labels “organic” and aren’t regulated worldwide, you can’t always be sure if what you’re getting is truly all-natural. So it pays to know which substances you should steer clear of. These include mineral oil, which is a byproduct of petroleum and is used as an emollient.

  3. Forget fragrances as well. Since manufacturers are not required to declare the exact kinds of fragrances that they add to cosmetics, some potentially harmful substances may get into the mix. One such example is phthalates, a hormone disruptor commonly found in artificial fragrances.

  4. Check the packaging. Sometimes it’s not the lotion or serum that you should be wary of. It’s the bottle that it comes in that may contain all those harmful substances. Some plastics, such as polycarbonate (marked as #7), have been known to leach dangerous materials like bisphenol-A into its contents. So as much as possible, go with those lotions or serums that come in glass bottles—they’re recyclable too!

  5. If you want a truly natural alternative to lotion, go for essential oils instead. Popularly used as a moisturizers in Europe, essential oils offer most of the benefits of lotion while getting to avoid all the harmful additives. For the best benefits, get those marked as “cold-pressed” or “100% pure.”
