About Organic

Let’s admit it: organic beauty products are usually more expensive than the regular ones out in the market. So is it really worth it to pay extra for these all-natural cosmetics?

For proponents of organic products, the answer is yes. For starters, while most cosmetics nowadays do not have high concentrations of lead and other toxic substances, that doesn’t mean they are totally absent from makeup. They claim that using regular makeup every day will lead to those substances accumulating in your system. These substances, when they reach a certain level, can then cause an adverse impact on your health.

However, there is no global standard that makeup companies follow when it comes to labeling their makeup as organic. While the USDA Organic seal is used by organic products originating from the United States, other countries may not have similar restrictions yet. And even the USDA Organic seal is hard to spot on cosmetics, as it’s mostly used for food items.

Yet if you still want to get products that are as natural as possible, here are some substances that you should avoid:

  1. Parabens, a group of preservatives that are considered as xenoestrogens, and may be linked to reproductive issues

  2. Phthalates, a group of chemicals that are suspected to be endocrine disruptors

  3. Toulene, a solvent linked to limb anomalies in a pregnant woman’s developing child

  4. Formaldehyde, a compound that can cause irritation in small doses and cancer in high doses

Most beauty products that claim to be organic do not have these substances. The four abovementioned substances are also not present in so-called 5-free products, which are often grouped together with organic products. So before you buy anything that’s organic, make sure to read the label first to ensure that you’re truly getting your money’s worth.
