ABOUT SPRAY BOTTLES

You may have been using them every day, but do you actually know how spray bottles work? No matter how fancy or simple they may look like, most of them work in the same way, with only minor variations. And yes, it’s not rocket science. Here’s a quick look at how they work.

First, we’d have to identify the parts of a spray bottle. The two most important components are the bottle, which contains the liquid we want to spray; and the head, which contains the spray mechanism. The head is further divided into smaller parts:

  1. The trigger, which is the part you press to discharge the liquid and is connected to the pump

  2. The pump, which is composed of a piston and a spring inside a cylinder

  3. The barrel, which is often fitted with a one-way valve

  4. The nozzle, which controls the flow of the liquid out—whether it’s more concentrated or more mist-like

  5. And the tube, which draws the fluid from the bottle.

When you press the trigger, it pushes on the pump’s piston and spring, and it forces the liquid out of the nozzle. Meanwhile, the barrel is fitted with a one-way valve that keeps the amount of liquid in the barrel and cylinder areas at the right level and pressure. Hence, with every push on the trigger, there is enough force generated to push the liquid out. And when you release the trigger, liquid is sucked up the tube into the barrel, refilling it. Thanks to the valve, the liquid does not flow back down.

This mechanism is also the reason why sometimes you have to press a trigger of the spray bottle a few times before any liquid comes out. In those cases, there may not be enough liquid in the cylinder or barrel.

So as you can see, a spray bottle is quite a simple machine that helps us apply water or various beauty products with very little effort.
