ABOUT WATCHES

With the cost of each top-quality watch running up into the thousands, it’s safe to say that each timepiece you buy is an investment. And like all things you invest in, it’s important to take care of them properly so that they will last longer. Hence, here are some tips to help you take care of your watch, whatever brand it may be:

  1. Clean your watch regularly. It’s as simple as wiping it clean at the end of the day using a soft cloth to remove any dust or dirt that has accumulated on it throughout the day. Cleaning is also important if your watch got submerged in the sea—the salt from saltwater can damage your watch. So after a swim, make sure to wash your watch with fresh, lukewarm water to remove any particles.

  2. Water resistance does not automatically mean waterproof. There are actually different kinds of water resistance, and yes, that means not all water-resistant watches can be submerged. Here’s a quick rundown:

a. Water resistant up to 30 meters, or only labeled “water resistant” – can only withstand splashes and sweat

b. Water resistant up to 50 meters – good enough for light swimming, but cannot be submerged for a long time

c. Water resistant up to 100 meters – suitable for all kinds of swimming, even for prolonged periods

d. Water resistant up to 200 meters – can be used for diving

e. Water resistant greater than 200 meters – designed for deep diving

  1. Have your timepiece checked by a professional. Everyday wear and tear can eventually spell the end for your watch. That’s why a periodic check is important—to spot any issues and fix them before they get worse. So remember to have your watch fully serviced every five years, and have its water resistance checked every two years.
