ABOUT BRACELETS

Bracelets are one of the most common kinds of jewelry today. Whether you’re a guy or a girl, who hasn’t owned one in his or her lifetime? Yet despite their ubiquity, there are some things that you may not know about this accessory. Here are 5 things that are nice to know:

  1. Bracelets were once used to refer to the small bracers that archers wore to guard their arms while in combat. It originated from the Old French word “barcel,” which in turn came from the Greek word “brachile,” which means “of the arm.”

  2. Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, bangles had a special role to play in Hindu traditions. For starters, women are not supposed to buy bangles for themselves to wear; they are usually given by other people. That said, it is considered unlucky for married women to have arms bare of bangles. A little toddler is given gold or silver bangles to wear, while a new bride will wear glass bangles at her wedding, and the honeymoon doesn’t end until the last glass bangle breaks. Meanwhile, a Sikh groom will be given a steel or iron bangle called a kara by the father of the bride on his wedding day.

  3. Back to more contemporary times: Tiffany and Co. introduced their iconic charm bracelet in 1889.

  4. Most traditional yellow gold bracelets are made from 14K to 18K gold. If the karat is any higher, the bracelet may be too soft for daily wear.

  5. Bracelets have different kinds of clasps and yes, they all have names. One example is the lobster clasp, one of the most popular out there, and which looks like a lobster claw. Another is the toggle, which is a small T-shaped bar is inserted into a ring or loop, and is commonly used for charm bracelets.
