Body bags and satchels are a stylish option for those who are always on the go, as they always keep valuables within easy reach. However, they are also the culprits behind chronic body pain extending from neck and shoulder, down to the back. So what are you to do? Here are some tips on carrying them to prevent pain:

  1. Don’t load your shoulder bag with too many items. Carrying a heavy bag on your shoulder for a long period of time is a sure-fire recipe for pain, not to mention that your bag will wear out faster if it’s carrying too much weight. To make sure that your bag is not too heavy, weigh it—it should not be heavier than 2% of your body weight. If it’s heavier than that, better leave some of the items at home.

  2. Can’t leave some things at home? Try splitting the contents between two smaller bags: a shoulder bag and a handbag.

  3. Choose a bag with a simpler design and a wide strap. A narrow strap focuses all the weight of the bag on a very small point on your body, causing pain in the long run. Hence, opt for a bag that has a wide strap, so that it distributes the weight evenly. And do away with the bells and whistles—buckles, studs, and other ornaments can weigh your bag down.

  4. Alternate the bag between your shoulders. Just like the tip above, if you’re going for a long walk carrying a body bag, you need to divide the weight between your two shoulders. So if you usually hang it on your left shoulder, make sure to transfer it to your right one after 15 to 20 minutes.

  5. Exercise. No matter how light your bag is, if your muscles are weak, you will feel sore at the end of the day. So start on a strength training routine and do some stretches to build a stronger body and prevent injury.
