The Gillette Company began when King C. Gillette came up with the idea for strong, thin disposable blades in the 1900s, which changed the way men shave forever. His concept of a smoother, closer shave was made even better with the first twin-blade shaving system in 1971, the first pivoting shaving cartridge in 1977, the first razor with a lubricating strip in 1985, with more innovations throughout the years. After becoming part of Procter & Gamble, Gillette diversified to manufacturing a large portfolio of products, which include razors, shaving supplies, and other personal care products.

Gillette is a brand of men’s safety razors, shaving supplies, and personal care products owned by the multi-national corporation Procter & Gamble. It was originally owned by The Gillette Company, a supplier of products under various brands, until that company merged into P&G in 2005.

Based in Boston, it was founded by King C. Gillette in 1901 as a safety razor manufacturer. The company began when he developed a disposable, thin, but resilient razor blade. That blade was deemed impossible to forge by MIT-trained scientists at that time. This thin-blade concept was taken further in 1971 with the invention of the twin-blade shaving system, giving men a smoother shave and eliminating leftover stubbles.

Further innovations to this technology took place in the succeeding years. In 1998, Gillette outdid its own performance with the Mach 3 razor, the first to incorporate the trademark 3-blade technology for an even smoother shave. This would again be taken further in 2006 with the Gillette Fusion razors, which debuted in manual and power versions. This model used five blades and beat the Mach 3 on every attribute, providing Gillette’s closest and most comfortable shave for men.

Finally, in 2015 Gillette introduced the Fusion ProShield, which builds on the 5-blade technology and provides lubrication before and after the blades. This helps to shield from irritation while you shave, maintaining maximum contact and comfort.
