Why Citronella Oil Is the Life Hack You're Looking For
When you think of citronella, insect repellant is probably the first thing that comes to mind. But did you know it can be used in many other ways, too? For instance, to treat zits and warts. Surprise, surprise!
Citronella oil is extracted from a grass plant native to Asia. This essential oil has been celebrated for its antiseptic, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal properties for years. And for good reason—this stuff works. But how exactly do you use it? Thought you’d never ask. Keep scrolling and learn 5 citronella hacks for everyday life.
1. CITRONELLA AS AN INSECT REPELLANT
If there’s one thing everyone associates with citronella, it’s bugs. All around the world, citronella is recognized as a safe insect repellant. It wards off dangerous mosquitos, which can spread harmful sicknesses like dengue fever. Use it frequently enough, and you’ll recognize the smell at first whiff.
HOW-TO: Dispense the oil from its bottle and spread it directly over exposed skin. You can also mix it with water and spray this over your skin, hair, and clothes. Don’t forget to reapply every 30 to 60 minutes!
2. CITRONELLA AS AN ACNE TREATMENT
Got a problem with recurring pimples? Citronella fights acne-causing bacteria the natural way. But it doesn’t stop at acne—citronella can also be used to treat warts, eczema, boils, and age spots.
HOW-TO: Add a few drops of oil to a cotton ball and dab it over the affected area. Do this three times a day and you’ll notice a significant reduction in your blemishes. Don’t be surprised if your skin looks younger and smoother, too!
3. CITRONELLA AS A ROOM SPRAY
Citronella has a clean, zesty scent that’s similar to lemon. That’s why people enjoy it in candle, soap, and even perfume form. Since it smells so good, this citrusy oil will also help neutralize any bad odors in your home.
HOW-TO: All you have to do is add 5 to 10 drops of citronella oil to 1/2 or 1 cup of water. Pour the mixture into your spray bottle and spritz! It’ll make your house smell fresh instantly.
4. CITRONELLA AS A STRESS RELIEVER FOR PETS
Personally, this is my favorite way to use citronella. The oil has a soothing effect when you sniff it, which can calm down agitated pets. (Humans, too.)
HOW-TO: Dilute a little bit of oil in water and make your pet smell it whenever necessary. Fun fact: you can also spray this onto your furniture to keep your pets from jumping on them. Don’t ask me why—it just works!
5. CITRONELLA AS NATURAL HAIR CARE
As much as possible (and whether or not you’re a wellness buff), you want to avoid using harmful chemicals on your scalp. Unfortunately, many commercial-grade hair products contain these chemicals in spades. So why not make your own natural alternative with citronella? The oil has the ability to cleanse and condition the hair and scalp. Thanks to its anti-fungal properties, it also helps lessen excess sebum and fight dandruff.
HOW-TO: Mix a few drops of citronella with almond or coconut oil, which will act as the base. Massage this oil blend over your scalp. You may choose to leave it overnight or rinse it out after a few minutes.
