Knowing your face shape is more than a neat trick for choosing the right sunglasses. It also helps you pinpoint the best place to swipe your blush based on the real estate you’re working with. It isn’t just the apples of your cheeks that should bear a flush—unless you’ve got a square face. But more on that below!
FOR A SQUARE FACE
Apply your blush to the apples of your cheeks using a circular or “half-moon” motion. The color will bring your roundest feature to the foreground, softening an angular face. Make sure to blend completely to avoid the dreaded clown effect.
FOR A DIAMOND FACE
Apply your blush directly above your cheekbones, blending back and sloping up towards the ears. This accentuates the symmetry of your face and creates the most natural and instinctual diffusion of color. Tip: Suck in your cheeks—the area above the hollow serves as your starting point.
FOR A ROUND FACE
Apply your blush below your cheekbones, bringing the color upwards to the temples. This will give you subtle contouring. You want to draw the attention to your cheekbones, not the apples of your cheeks.
FOR AN OVAL FACE
Apply your blush over your cheekbones, then sweep it slightly upwards, following the groove of your bone. You don’t need much help contour-wise, since you’re working with what’s been called the “ideal” face shape.
FOR AN OBLONG FACE
Apply your blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend it out horizontally—not upwards—towards your ears. And by blend, we do mean blend. You don’t want to end up with warrior stripes across each cheek! A “linear” application will balance the length of your face, rounding your chin and the top of your forehead.
FOR A HEART-SHAPED FACE
Apply your blush directly below the apples of your cheeks, concentrating the color in the center and then sweeping it more faintly upwards towards the temples. This will highlight your impeccable bone structure.
