Unless you’re Dr. Pimple Popper, taking your blackheads (and whiteheads) into your own hands isn’t the best idea. Squeezing out those suckers might give you satisfaction in the moment, but you’ll regret it the next morning when you wake up to red, wounded skin.

While scrubbing and squeezing seem to work, they only scratch the surface (literally). Blackheads and whiteheads are lodged deep within your pores. Removing them with force does more harm than good—it can cause irritation, inflammation, or worse, scarring. So before you try to perform an at-home exorcism on those beady-eyed demons, it is super important that you consider your best options.
Now, if the Interwebs are to be believed, the My Scheming Blackhead Removal Mask Set from Taiwan is one of those options. There is no squeezing, scrubbing, or scraping involved with this stuff—just black magic. And by black magic, we mean an activated charcoal mask that you apply to your problem areas and peel off once dry! The charcoal in the mask absorbs gunk 100 to 200 times its weight to effectively remove impurities from the skin. The Blackhead Removal Mask Set involves a three-step process: first a softener, then the mask itself, then an essence. I invited Kim to test it out with me because we share the same skin type (combination with troublesome T-Zones) and dream—to banish our blackheads for good! Soak a cotton pad with the Deep Pore Sebum Softener. The bottle is marked with the number 1 to minimize confusion. Once the pad is thoroughly wet, apply the softener all over your face to break down the oil and dead cells that have accumulated in your pores. We paid extra attention to our trouble areas for maximum effect. Wait 1 to 2 minutes for the softener to absorb before moving on to the next step.

Squeeze a generous amount of the Blackhead Removal Activated Carbon Mask onto your finger. It has a gluey, gloopy consistency—and yes, it’s actually black! Coat your trouble areas evenly in the thick black slime. You want to create an opaque layer without any patchy areas so that the mask peels off neatly when dry. Keep it on for 20 to 30 minutes.
When the glossy finish dries to matte, gently peel the mask off. Check out the strip before tossing it out—your blackheads and whiteheads should be stuck to it!

To finish, soak another cotton pad with the Skin Clarifying Pore Treatment Essence. The bottle is marked with the number 3 to minimize confusion. Gently pat it over your face and massage it into your skin. This will help restore moisture and maintain skin elasticity.

THE VERDICT: This mask was so much fun to use! After we peeled off the dry mask, we immediately noticed three things:

1) Our skin was soft to the touch
2) The pores on our trouble areas were less visible
3) There were bits of sebum stuck to the peeled-off mask! Yay!

Now, if you’re squeamish, you might want to look away, because we took a close-up:
Both Kim and I agree that seeing the aftermath was viscerally satisfying and our favorite part of the whole process. We can only imagine the benefits of this mask set if used over a continuous period of time. No need to use our fingers for forceful blackhead obliteration!
