Watch: How to Use the Internet-Famous Silicone Sponge
Our beauty-obsessed team is always on the lookout for exciting new products, but even we were stumped by the “sili-sponge.” What looks like a breast implant, bra insert, and chicken cutlet is actually a silicone applicator. Yes, it’s a makeup sponge, except it feels like jelly and is completely see-through.
Although visually unusual, the idea behind the sili-sponge is simple. Because of its non-absorbent material, it delivers a seamless foundation finish using notably less product. Apparently, you get no wastage and great coverage. Because of this, the sili-sponge is now famous on the Internet for being comparable to a certain cult-fave egg-shaped sponge. Could this be?!
Now, there’s a huge difference between buying into the hype and actually believing in a product. So naturally, we put the sili-sponge to the test. Our friends at The A-List sent over their Sili-Face Blender for this demo—and we did all the detective work for you.
STEP 1: Pump a small amount of foundation onto the sili-sponge.
STEP 2: Dab the product over your cheeks, forehead, chin, and nose.
STEP 3: Use the sili-sponge to stipple the foundation into your skin. Quick tapping motions work best for application.
USAGE: Because it’s unlike any other makeup applicator we’ve tried, the Sili-Face Blender takes some getting used to. When you first distribute the product all over your face, you might have the same thoughts we did: why does it look so streaky? Have patience, girls. As soon as you tap-tap-tap the product in, the sili-sponge produces the silky, even coverage it was designed for. It will take some getting used to, but you’ll get there in time.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS: While application might take a little work, cleaning the blender is a breeze. Just wash it with soap and warm water, and any product residue will slide right off! The silicone base repels oil and grease as well, so you don’t have to worry about bacteria festering on the surface or inside it.
And now, to answer the burning question: can the sili-sponge replace your regular applicator? As long as you set aside time in the mornings to perfect your FOTD, we don’t see why not. It’s not quite an on-the-go product for touch-ups, but it will deliver lasting results. Try it!
