In South Korea, the term for contouring is “shading,” and it’s a far cry from the stark Kardashian lines we’re used to. Like all things K-beauty, this type of contouring is soft and subtle. It’s goal is to shrink the face more than it is to sculpt it. With the help of Banila Co.’s latest creation, it’s also super easy to do.

Look at this:
That, ladies, is the So Strobing Contour Jelly, fresh out of Banila’s latest shipment. Housed inside this bite-sized compact is something we’re dubbing a pressed putty. When you poke it with your finger, the product feels less like Jell-O (which is what we were expecting from the name) and more like Play-Doh. Stranger still, your finger will come away completely dry, not wet and sticky!
Suffice it to say that this product is not a jelly jelly, but it is a sort of hybrid. The velvety, gel-type formula combines the blendability of a cream with the soft-focus finish of a powder. Each compact comes with a two-tone combination: one dark brown for contouring and one light cream for highlighting. While the pigment is buildable, its color payoff is designed to be discreet. That means you can use this thing for a no-makeup makeup look, and no one would be the wiser. Ready?

SHADING 101

STEP 1: Starting with the darker shade, trace your forehead, jawline, and right in front of your ear.
Korean-style contouring is all about making your face look smaller. By outlining the outer perimeter, you create shadows that minimize the width and length of your face.

STEP 2: Draw a line on either side of your nose bridge and underneath your cheekbones.
This creates the illusion of a narrower nose, slimmer cheeks, and a V-shaped face. The V-Line (as it is called) is the shape that shading strives to achieve.

STEP 3: Moving on to the lighter shade, highlight the following areas: the bridge of your nose, above the cheekbones, the center of your chin, between your brows, and right over your Cupid’s bow.
When you emphasize the high points of your face (AKA the places where light hits), this instantly makes you glow. That radiance is just as important as the actual contour.

STEP 4: Gently pat the pigments with the cushion puff to blend away all harsh lines. The idea is to make the product and your skin one.
And there you have it: a slimmer face with a youthful glow. So, do you think you’re ready for this jelly?
