Oily skin: the root of all evil in a beauty junkie’s world. It breaks down makeup, clogs pores, and triggers acne (among other things). The good news? You’re not stuck with it forever. While you can’t stop oil production, per se, you can restore balance by avoiding common skincare mistakes oily girls make. You won’t just see the difference—you’ll feel it too. Problem solved!

Thorough cleansing is a must. But in excess, it strips your skin of necessary oils. This causes your sebaceous glands to go into overdrive. Then, it just turns into a vicious cycle: the more you dry out your skin, the oilier it becomes. Yikes!

THE FIX: To neutralize the effects of oily skin, use a low pH, sulfate-free cleanser. This gives you a deep-pore cleanse and removes shine—without removing moisture along with it.

As aggressive as sloughing off dead skin may sound, it’s not supposed to hurt. Harsh formulas only cause irritation and inflammation. As a result, your skin becomes even more vulnerable to clogging, hyper-pigmentation, and premature wrinkles.

THE FIX: Opt for a non-abrasive exfoliant like a peeling gel. Use it no more than twice or thrice a week. These kinds of exfoliants will selectively erode dead skin cells and surface grime. And by “selectively,” we mean all the healthy skin will be spared.

Traditional astringents contain dehydrating ingredients (like alcohol). While these formulas are great for drying out acne and erasing shine, they also strip away a lot of moisture. In the end, the side effects aren’t worth the benefits.

THE FIX: Use hydrating toners. These gentle formulas switch out alcohol for natural astringents like witch hazel and glycolic acid. Their antiseptic properties will help you banish bacteria. And just like the name says, they won’t deplete your skin’s moisture levels.

Most people mistake oiliness for moisture. This couldn’t be farther from the truth! Your skin is still prone to dehydration, especially after cleansing. In short, oily skin needs moisture just as much as any other skin type.

THE FIX: Help your skin retain water by moisturizing daily. Of course, you should always use a formula that’s made for oily skin: lightweight, oil-free, and hypoallergenic.

Ever heard that if you have oily skin, you’re less prone to wrinkles? This is true. However, fine lines are inevitable no matter what your skin type! While oily girls experience wrinkle formation later than others, it’s still no reason to neglect your skin.

THE FIX: Start an anti-aging regimen as early as now. This will prevent premature aging and extend the youthfulness of your complexion. Opt for formulas that contain both skin-healing and oil-control ingredients. Our faves include snail mucin and bee venom.
