During the holidays, we tend to overdo things. We overeat, we overspend—you get the picture. But if there’s one thing you should never ever overdo, it’s your makeup. So, here are 5 holiday makeup mistakes you should try to avoid.

A smoky eye and a red lip are perfect holiday looks. But wearing both at the same time will make you standout—and not in a good way.

THE FIX: You either play up your eyes or your lips, not both. If you accentuate your eyes, swipe on an MLBB. If you focus on your lips, do the reverse and brush on a neutral eyeshadow.

Unbeknownst to many, there is such a thing as too much highlighter. Adding too much shimmer looks unnatural or just plain tacky.

THE FIX: If you want to shine, apply shimmer strategically and sparingly. Dust highlighter over your cheekbones, along the bridge of your nose, and right over your brow bones. And remember: less is more!

‘Tis the season of silver and gold, but those two don’t mix well on the face. They’ll reflect too much light and leave you shinier than an ornament.

THE FIX: Just pick one! Need help deciding? Here’s something for reference: silver looks good on fair skin tones, while warm golds flatter darker skin. Easy!

Like highlighter, using too much bronzer is not good. When applied in excess, it’ll effect the exact opposite of what you want: subtlety.

THE FIX: Apply your bronzer only where needed: over your hairline, under your cheekbones, and across your jawline. Then, buff it out with blending brush. The result: a natural-looking sculpt.

There’s nothing worse than applying your makeup only for it to fade soon after. And in the throes of party season? You’ll need extra insurance.

THE FIX: After applying your makeup, use a setting spray. All you have to do is spritz it on. Rest assured, your holiday look will stay in place from a party’s start to finish.
