Ah, exfoliation, the most under-utilized of skincare techniques. It is a fact that what you remove from your face is just as important as what you apply to it (even if what you apply is a luxury moisturizer). So whether you get down to business with a physical scrub or power through layers of dead skin with a chemical peel, exfoliation is crucial for gorgeous skin. Which brings us to the theme of this tutorial: microdermabrasion. This mouthful of a word describes a kind of professional-grade exfoliation that uses a pressurized jet to polish the outermost layer of the skin with microcrystals. The process removes dead cells gently and efficiently, which in turn improves the overall look of your money-maker. Yup, microdermabrasion doesn’t just smoothen out your face—it can also fade hyperpigmentation, minimize large pores, and diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

But getting your skin sloughed by dermatologists and trained aestheticians doesn’t come cheap, especially if you want to do it all the time. We bring good news, though! This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Microdermabrasion Device by local beauty brand Aesthetique:
Yes, it’s a Filipino invention, and yes, we think it’s going to be a game-changer for at-home exfoliation. Now, we’re not going to mince words: the thing looks straight out of a sci-fi flick. It’s got that chrome techie feel to it that could easily intimidate a first-timer—what with the all the buttons, knobs, and extra accessories to be attached. But will that stop me, a girl with a greasy T-Zone, flaky cheeks, and a self-professed exfoliation addiction? No way, Jose.
Below, I recorded my attempt to demystify this wonderful new tool in GIF format. Keep scrolling to find out how it all works, whether it’s worth the investment (P10,000), and if the device delivers derma-worthy results.

The device comes with a charging pod and electric cord, three interchangeable diamond-tip heads, felt discs, and a cleaning wand. Once you’ve unboxed everything, connect the device to the charging pod and plug it into an electrical socket to power it up. The screen should tell you once it is ready to use.

The heads are interchangeable for a reason. Depending on what area of your skin you are using the device for, you must use the proper tip—otherwise, it can do your skin more harm than good. The biggest head is designated for your body, the medium for the larger surfaces of your face, and the smallest is for the more delicate areas. To switch the heads, simply push or pull the head from the top of the device. So easy!

At the other end of each head, you’ll notice a felt disc. This should be switched out after every use because it catches the dead skin cells the device vacuums from the outermost layer. Do use the cleaning wand as needed to keep the device in tip-top shape.
We encourage you to use the device together with Aesthetique’s three-step skincare system. The Revitalize Cleanser purifies your skin beforehand, while the Revitalize Cooling Gel soothes any redness you might experience afterward (this is normal, BTW!). Finally, the Revitalize Sunblock Gel is ideal for use if you will be exposed to the sun following your microdermabrasion.

Wet your skin. Apply the Revitalize Cleanser as you would a regular face wash. Towel off.

Click on the “power” button to start up the device.

The mode you choose will determine how gentle or strong the force of the microdermabrasion will be. This really just depends on what part of the face you plan to exfoliate. If you’re still not satisfied with your mode, you can easily adjust it using the up-and-down arrow buttons.

As mentioned, the device comes with three separate heads that can be utilized for different functions. Since I wanted to use it all over my face, I went for the medium head. Using an upward back-and-forth motion, I ran the device over my face by area. The screen on the device will tell you which area you should be on and how many seconds you should work on it until it’s time to move on to the next.

When you are done exfoliating, simply click the same button you used to start the device.

To finish, apply the Revitalize Cooling Gel all over your face. This will soothe the skin you’ve just buffed to perfection.

If you’re using the device during the day, don’t forget to apply the Revitalize Sunblock Gel to your face as your final step before makeup.

USAGE: I would definitely recommend the Aesthetique Microdermabrasion Device if you are obsessed with exfoliating and refuse to leave a single skin cell un-sloughed. Once you get the hang of it, the device is quite easy to use. If anything, there will be some fumbling and hesitation on your first try, but that’s just normal. The fact that the system comes with “matching” skincare (sold separately) is a nice bonus! EFFECT: The most noticeable effect after a single microdermabrasion session is brighter, smoother skin.

FREQUENCY: Just once a week will do. Any more than that and you risk making your pelt red, raw, and painful to the touch. This device is as close as you can get to the real thing, in my opinion, and you don’t get professional microdermabrasion done every day, right? Can’t wait for my next session (like the exfoliating addict that I am).
