Don’t get us wrong, running is great exercise. But it isn’t for everyone; one person’s energetic mile is another’s boredom-inducing slog. We won’t pass judgement if you admit you dislike running—or even hate it. Whatever your reservations about the activity, it’s by no means an excuse to stay glued to the couch.
Lucky for non-runners who are in need of exercise, there are a ton of options that don’t involve the dread-mill. Below, 3 exercises that can burn more calories than a one-hour run—and in 30 minutes or less. Scroll!

Jumping rope is a total-body workout that can burn as much—if not more—calories than running. The motion works everything from your arms and legs to your abs and chest. Because it requires so many parts to work simultaneously, it also helps build coordination, agility, and balance. And since you only need one piece of equipment, you can jump rope anywhere. Just stash it in your gym bag or in your suitcase for a workout on the go. No excuses!

High-intensity interval training, also known as HIIT, is an exercise that combines two of the most effective fat-burning methods. The first method is high-intensity training, which pushes the body to work at maximum effort in short bursts of time. The second method is interval training, which alternates periods of high-intensity effort with periods of low-intensity effort to keep the heart rate up. By combining the two methods, HIIT increases calorie burn during and after workouts.

Not only reserved for gym junkies and bodybuilders, resistance training can benefit just about everybody in a myriad of ways. Think: better sleep, less stress, and more energy. And when paired with the right diet, resistance training may help you lose weight more effectively than cardio alone. In fact, for most people, it only takes two to three weekly sessions (for less than a month) to see visible muscle tone. Oh, and don’t forget the “afterburn effect”—which increases your metabolism for up to 24 or 48 hours after your workout.
