There’s plenty to love about micellar water: it’s cheap, efficient, and easy to use. Not to mention, it feels just like regular water on the face but is capable of removing every last trace of makeup. If there’s a multi-tasking product that can stand in for our entire cleansing routine every now and again, it’s gotta be this!

Now, with every big beauty breakthrough such as micellar water, there are a hundred different versions that are released into the market. But only a handful actually grasp the power of the original micellar water—a precious, French-made formula—without prompting an onslaught of clogged pores and pimples. What’s a girl to do?
Go back to the source, that’s what. A few days ago, L’Oréal Paris sent us a gift: not one, but two bottles of their brand-new micellar water line. Whee! BeautyMNL staff writers Dani and Kim put them to the test, taking on a bottle apiece.

There are two kinds: the Micellar Water Refreshing 3-in-1 (now available) and the Micellar Water Moisturizing 3-in-1 (coming to our Shop in November). Both the Refreshing and Moisturizing variants claim to cut through stubborn makeup and dissolve an entire day’s worth of Manila’s deadly heat-humidity-water combo.

STEP 1: Soak a cotton pad with micellar water.
STEP 2: Press the cotton pad over your eyes, keeping it there for a few seconds until you wipe it off. Repeat for your lips.
STEP 3: Take a fresh cotton and repeat steps 1 and 2. Wipe the cotton pad all over your face.
And now, for the comparative study!

DANI: “After pitting this formula against a face full of makeup, it’s as if I’d undergone a thorough scrub with soap and water. The Refreshing variant wiped away a day’s worth of my grease, grime, and cosmetic residue. Tip: For waterproof mascara and long-wearing matte lipstick, you’ll have to apply more pressure to your skin so the micellar water can melt everything away. Don’t worry, though—it did the job without leaving me raw or ruddy. In fact, my skin felt softer and looked a little dewier after use!”

KIM: “The Moisturizing variant offers the same promise as its sister bottle. The only difference is the aftermath. This micellar water coats your face in a soothing, hydrating film that sinks into your skin immediately. Sweet! Although the super scienc-y formula picks up residue like a boss, it didn’t feel like my face had stripped or desiccated, which is great. This actually locks in extra moisture that’s essential for a clear complexion. In short: the formula was beyond comfortable and really effective.”

If we had to nitpick, we’d say that the Micellar Water Refreshing 3-in-1 is best for oily and combination skin, while the Micellar Water Moisturizing 3-in-1 is best for dry skin—by a very slim margin. Both bottles offer the same deep-down-clean you crave, and that’s the most important thing.
The Micellar Water Refreshing 3-in-1 is available on BeautyMNL for P175. Shop it right here! Stay tuned for the launch of the Micellar Water Moisturizing 3-in-1 next month.
