The Editors Answer: How to Detox Your Skin for the New Year
Every day, we get questions from our customers about all things beauty. It can be about anything, from which products we personally swear by to exactly how to use them for best results. So this week, the BeautyMNL Editors are answering a few inquiries that came in through the mail. By that, of course, we mean our email: firstname.lastname@example.org. There’s no Q too big or too small, too strange or too simplistic, so keep ‘em coming, beautiful!
HOW DO YOU GIVE YOUR SKIN A DETOX?
Mau: “My skin’s been acting up a lot thanks to the Christmas season-induced stress (and a lot of holiday party drinking). What can I do to reverse the damage or just give my skin a ‘restart’?”
ANSWER: Oh, man, we feel you. Between the usual work hustle and hassle holiday prep, we’re pooped. Luckily, 2018 is about to give us all a fresh start—including our skin! And our favorite way to start any new year? With a deep skin detox. That means purging and clearing out impurities as thoroughly as possible. You want to give your skin a clean slate (literally). But don’t worry, it’s not as complex as it sounds.
Below, find a short 5-step routine that’ll purify your pores and give your skin a fresh, new start. You deserve it!
STEP 1: REMOVE SURFACE GRIME
WHAT WE USED: April Skin Signature Stone (Black), P660. Shop it here!
Before anything else: cleanse! The goal here is simply to rid your face of any surface dirt. That includes makeup, sweat, oil, and other impurities your skin may have picked up.
For best results, choose a purifying formula like this unique K-beauty bar. It’s infused with Gangwondo hardwoon charcoal, which purifies the skin and flushes out hard-to-remove dirt.
TO USE: Mix the soap with water and lather it up between your hands. Once suds form, apply it to your skin. Then, massage your face in upward, circular motions.
STEP 2: EXFOLIATE LAYERS OF DEAD SKIN CELLS
WHAT WE USED: Swan Round Facial Konjac Sponge, P100. Shop it here!
Before rinsing off, make the most of the cleansing process by exfoliating first! This will remove layers of dullness, dead skin cells, flaky skin, and rough texture. (These are impurities your cleanser alone may not be able to remove!)
For gentle exfoliation, konjac sponges are our favorite way to go. Made of soft vegetable fiber, these fluffy tools buff away impurities without being too abrasive on the skin. Plus, they help create more foam when used with your cleanser, too!
TO USE: Soak the konjac sponge under running water until it turns completely soft. Squeeze out any excess water. On wet skin, massage your face with the sponge using upward circular motions.
Make sure to exfoliate around hard-to-reach areas, like around the nose and mouth. Once done, rinse your face with warm water. Then, wash the sponge and hang it up to dry.
STEP 3: CLEAR OUT DEEP-SEATED DIRT
WHAT WE USED: L’Oreal Paris Anti-Pores Pure Clay Mask, P399. Shop it here!
Now, on to the fun stuff! Once you’re done removing surface grime, it’s time to go into deeper pore care. Clogged pores are often the cause of pimples, blackheads, and overall dullness. So, by clearing out deep-seated dirt, you keep your skin clean from the inside out and prevent future breakouts.
And the best way to do it? With an indulgent, spa-inspired clay mask. This affordable formula is made with eucalyptus and 3 types of pure clay: kaolin, montmorillonite, and Moroccan lava clay. Together, they draw out and capture any dirt that may have settled within your pores.
TO USE: Using your fingers, apply an even layer of clay all over your face. Avoid getting too close to the eye area. Then, let the clay harden for around 10 to 15 minutes. Once that’s done, rinse it off with lukewarm water.
STEP 4: TONE YOUR SKIN
WHAT WE USED: Skin Genie Apple Cider Vinegar Toner, P250. Shop it here!
Next step: toner! This is a must-do immediately after cleansing. Not only does it refine your skin, it also removes residue, restores pH balance, and provides anti-oily protection. All in one sweep!
This crowd-fave local formula brings a bevy of benefits. Made with apple cider vinegar, Russian vodka, lemon, tea tree, and witch hazel, this anti-viral solution does everything from deliver light hydration to fight pimples.
TO USE: Spray an ample amount of formula onto a cotton pad. Then, sweep the pad over your skin in upward, circular motions. (If you don’t have cotton on hand, simply spray the toner directly onto your skin. Then, pat until it’s fully absorbed.)
STEP 5: SOOTHE & MOISTURIZE
WHAT WE USED: My Scheming 7-in-1 Brightening Mask, P95. Shop it here!
To cap everything off, end your routine with a sheet mask. These soothing treatments basically bathe your skin in nourishment and moisture. When used on freshly detoxed skin, the serum should absorb right up!
Any sheet mask will do, but we recommend a black sheet mask for best results. This particular material is infused with skin-clearing charcoal. (Clearly, we love this ingredient.) So, while the mask coats your skin in serum, it simultaneously absorbs dirt and other impurities at the same time! And did we mention its brightening benefits, too?
TO USE: Remove the sheet mask from the pack and carefully unfold the material. Place the mask over your face. Then, let it sit for at least 15 minutes. After removing the mask, gently pat in any excess serum until fully absorbed.
May 2018 be your best skin year yet!
