Every day, we get questions from our customers about all things beauty. It can be about anything, from which products we personally swear by to exactly how to use them for best results. So this week, the BeautyMNL Editors are answering a few inquiries that came in through the mail. By that, of course, we mean our email: sos@beautymnl.com. There’s no Q too big or too small, too strange or too simplistic, so keep ‘em coming, beautiful!

HOW MUCH PRODUCT SHOULD I USE FOR EACH STEP IN MY SKINCARE ROUTINE?

Karen: “I’ve been following a solid skincare routine for a while, but I’m not sure if I’m using the right amount of product. How much do I need to use to really cover my face?”

ANSWER: Like all things in skincare, the amount of product you use should be tailor-fit for your needs. Not all faces are equal in size! Also, the size of your dollop or number of drops needed often depends on the thickness of the formula you’re using. For the sake of standardizing, here’s a quick guide you can use as a rule of thumb. We’re sharing exactly how much product to dispense for every type of skincare—from cleanser to sunblock.

FOR CLEANSERS

AMOUNT: The size of a pea.

When it comes to cleansers, it’s less about the substance itself and more about the lather it can produce. Thus, a little goes a long way. Just for safety, use pea-sized amount to generate enough suds for your face and neck.

FOR TONERS

AMOUNT: Enough to soak 1 whole cotton pad.

Since toners usually come in very watery formulas and with different bottle designs, it can be difficult to measure how much you need to use. So, use a cotton pad as your guide. Dispense just enough product to soak the whole pad. Remember to use both sides of the pad. That amount of toner should suffice to properly cover your face and neck.

FOR SERUMS, AMPOULES, AND ESSENCES

AMOUNT: The size of a centavo coin.

Compared to regular creams, targeted treatments like serums, ampoules, and essences have a thinner, more syrupy consistency. This allows them to spread easily over the skin. And since they contain powerful, concentrated ingredients, you only need a cent-sized amount to treat your problem areas.

FOR CREAMS

AMOUNT: The size of one peso coin for the face, and another for the neck and chest.

For moisturizers, sleeping packs, and other creamy emollients, a peso-sized amount should be enough to cover your whole face. Dot the product over your forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin and spread out until even. For your neck and chest, simply use another serving of the same amount.

FOR EYE CREAM

AMOUNT: The size of a pea per eye.

Use a pea-sized dollop of cream per eye. This should be enough to cover your under-eyes, lids, and outer corners. Remember to gently dab on the product—don’t drag it across your skin!

FOR SUNSCREEN

AMOUNT: The size of a cherry tomato.

If there’s anything we’re particular about when it comes to coverage, it’s sunscreen. You have to be sure to cover every inch of exposed skin for effective protection. As a reference, apply about a cherry tomato-sized dollop over your face, neck, and ears. (Everyone forgets the ears.)

FOR BODY

AMOUNT: About one-third of a large shot glass.

If you’ll be applying lotion or sunscreen on your body, you’ll need more product to cover the larger surface areas. Picture a large-sized shot glass, then dispense one-third that amount into your palm. This should suffice to cover your skin from your shoulders down to your feet!

With this quick guide, your skincare has (literally) got you covered! But remember, we see it as a simple rule of thumb. Your mileage may vary depending on the size of your face, the kind of formulas you favor, and the needs of your skin. Do what works for you!
