Every day, we get questions from our customers about all things beauty. It can be anything, from which products we personally swear by to exactly how to use them for best results. So this week, the BeautyMNL Editors are answering a few inquiries that came in through the mail. By that, of course, we mean our email: sos@beautymnl.com. There’s no Q too big or too small, too strange or too simplistic, so keep ‘em coming, beautiful!

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO APPLY FOUNDATION?

Lara: “No matter what foundation I use, it still looks unnatural on my face. I must be doing something wrong. What’s the best way to apply a liquid base?”

ANSWER: We all know the makings of a good foundation: skin-like coverage, humidity-friendly consistency, and the perfect hue to match you. But regardless of what foundation you’re using, there are certain things you can do to take your base from good to great. Here are 4 game-changing foundation hacks we tried this week! Using one of our favorite liquid bases, we’ll show you how to turn your personal canvas into a masterpiece.

HACK #1: BLEND YOUR FOUNDATION OUTWARDS

One of the biggest foundation boo-boos most beginners make is forgetting to blend the outer perimeter of the face. Leaving harsh lines there (or applying no makeup at all) will create an outline and make your foundation appear mask-like. To avoid this altogether, start blending your base from the center moving outwards. When applied this way, your foundation naturally fades out towards the edges of the face, so it looks like real skin.
WHAT WE USED: Maybelline Fit Me Liquid Foundation (available here) + Wunder2 Wunderblend (available here)

STEP 1: Soak your sponge. Squeeze out the excess water.

STEP 2: Dab your foundation all over your face, concentrating in the center.

STEP 3: Bounce your damp sponge over your face to blend the foundation. This movement is called “stippling.” Stipple your product from your nose to your cheeks, moving outwards; then your forehead moving towards the hairline; then your jaw and chin moving down towards the neck; and so on.

HACK #2: TURN YOUR FOUNDATION INTO A FACE TINT

Some days call for full coverage, but others will only require a soft, even finish. Turn your foundation into a skin tint by mixing it with moisturizer! This will sheer out the formula and add a boost of hydration to your base. As a result, you get lightweight coverage that won’t mask your natural skin tone.
WHAT WE USED: Maybelline Fit Me Liquid Foundation (available here) + L’Oréal Paris Magic Blur Moisturizer (available here)

STEP 1: Take one-part moisturizer and one-half-part foundation.

STEP 2: Combine the products on the back of your hand using your fingers.

STEP 3: Blend the mixture over your entire face using a damp sponge or foundation brush. You can even use your fingers if you’re accustomed to finger application.

HACK #3: ADD A GLOWING FINISH WITH HIGHLIGHTER

Flat pancake makeup is so yesterday. These days, glowing skin is the look to strive for. You don’t even need to strobe! Just cut the process in half by mixing your foundation with a little liquid highlighter. By infusing your base with shimmer, you’ll achieve the kind of subtle radiance that seems built in.
WHAT WE USED: Maybelline Fit Me Liquid Foundation (available here) + Benefit High Beam (available here)

STEP 1: Take one-part moisturizer and one-half-part foundation.

STEP 2: Combine the products on the back of your hand using your fingers.

STEP 3: Dab the mixture over your entire face. Concentrate a little more product on areas you would normally highlight—over your cheekbones, brow bones, nose bridge, and chin.

STEP 4: Blend as usual using a damp sponge or foundation brush.

HACK #4: SET ONLY YOUR T-ZONE
 TO STOP LOOKING FLAT

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to use setting powder all over your face. (And yes, this goes for oily skin types, too!) Try setting your foundation only where you tend to grease up: your T-zone. Your T-zone encompasses your forehead, nose, chin, and the area around your mouth (look in the mirror and see how it forms a T!). This is most likely the oiliest area of your face. What this foundation hack does is keep your makeup intact and prevent shine while maintaining a three-dimensional, real-skin finish.
WHAT WE USED: Maybelline Fit Me Liquid Foundation (available here) + RCMA No Color Powder (available here) + Suesh Angled Blush Brush (available here)

STEP 1: Apply your foundation exactly how we taught you in Hack #1.

STEP 2: Dip a clean powder brush in loose powder. Tap off any excess. You want to use as little powder as possible to avoid caking.

STEP 3: Lightly dab the brush over your T-zone. This will mattify the area without disturbing your base or leaving behind too much powder. If you use concealer on your under eye area, sweep your brush over there, too.
