If you really think about it, no other name could be more befitting of foundation than, well, foundation. Not only is it the first step in our makeup routines, it’s also the base upon which we build our faces. Depending on how well it is chosen and how expertly it is applied, foundation can spell the difference between a dynamite look and a beauty disaster.
To save face (pun intended), we’ve rounded up five easy hacks for your best-looking base yet! Here’s how to find The One and make it work hard for you, starring the L’Oréal True Match Two Way Cake Foundation.
5 BEST PRACTICES FOR FOUNDATION
1. SWATCH THREE SHADES
To find the perfect foundation, it’s ideal to pick up three shades that are closest to your skin tone. Swatch them next to each other over your jawline. The shade that almost disappears is the best match.
2. SWITCH FOR THE SEASONS
Think your face stays the same color throughout the year? Nope! If you’re always at the beach in the summer months, your regular shade will probably be a little deeper. If the rain keeps you from the coast during the -ber months, your regular shade will probably be a little lighter. Either way, it’s always great to have two mainstay foundation shades on hand.
3. POWDER FOUNDATION = DOWNWARD APPLICATION
When you’re working with foundation (powder foundation, especially), always apply it downwards. That means your strokes should be moving towards your neck, not your scalp. Why? Upward strokes will accentuate the appearance of pores, making your skin look more textured than it should.
4. CONCENTRATE IN THE CENTER
Typically, most redness and pigmentation shows up along our T-Zone, which is where we need the most coverage. By applying most of your foundation on your nose, forehead, chin, and the apples of cheeks and working outwards from there, you get optimal coverage without looking cakey.
5. EXPERIMENT WITH WET AND DRY SPONGES
A “two-way cake” like L’Oréal’s is a powder formula designed for two kinds of application. With a dry sponge, the foundation goes on like a veil, providing light to medium coverage. This is great for people with relatively clear skin who just want to even out their tone, diminish their pores, or keep shine under control. With a wet sponge, however, the foundation applies opaque! Just spritz your sponge with water, glide it over the product, and stipple it in. This is ideal for people with blemished skin who need natural-looking, budge-proof camouflage.
As mentioned earlier, the right foundation is one that (obviously) complements your natural skin tone. But it should also deliver great coverage without any caking, and of course, withstand the weather—just like the True Match Two Way Cake Foundation. We’re sure some of you own this gem already!
The L’Oréal foundation is designed with fancy Opti-Match technology, which makes the formula adjust to your skin tone to create the best possible match. And in case you couldn’t tell by the name, it can be used two ways: dry or wet, depending on how much coverage you require.
