We are proud to present the first-ever BeautyMNL Awards: a five-part event that celebrates this fabulous year in beauty. After comprehensive discussion—and a whole lot of road-testing—the girls at the BeautyMNL office have listed the Best Products of 2016.
In the third installment of The BeautyMNL Awards, we’re highlighting the products that give us the best hair days. Hair care is a category so often taken for granted because it’s as basic as soap and water. But the truth is, once you find the shampoo, styling spray, or treatment mask that changes your mane, it pretty much changes your life.

The BeautyMNL Team is a good mix of straight-wavy-curly and dry-oily-normal in the hair department. So rest assured, your hair woes were well-represented at the deliberations for this list. Without further ado, here are the Best Hair Products of 2016, according to our girls.

Bedhead/TIGI Ego Boost, on sale at P1,300 (limited time only)
“I actually discovered this product through my mom, and now we’re both devotees of it! I’ve been really prone to split ends this year, so my mom gave me a bottle of Ego Boost to treat them. I’ve used this product regularly since then (on a weekly basis, I’d say). It has made my hair so much healthier, stronger, and smoother, so big thanks to Bedhead (and to Mom!)” – Carli D.

Avalon Organics Nourishing Lavender Shampoo, on sale at P325 (limited time only)
“I have thick, straight hair that is quite dry, and my scalp tends to get flaky. It gets even worse when I use a product that’s too perfume-y or is not made with natural ingredients. High maintenance, I know! That’s why I am always on the lookout for a really gentle, nourishing shampoo that won’t cost an arm and a leg. This one by Avalon Organics fits the bill perfectly and is so good for my hair, too! I know this is really organic because my hair is so squeaky-clean after a wash, it requires some serious conditioning.” – Christine S.

Tangle Teezer Compact Styler, P1,050
“I know, I know, I’m joining the Tangle Teezer bandwagon a few years late. But honestly, this THE best hairbrush I’ve ever used in my life. You can comb it through dry or wet hair, curly or pin-straight, and it still works wonders. Best of all, there is no static left behind post-brushing—just a silkier, smoother, and more manageable mop!” – Dani C.

Toni & Guy Glamour Volume Dry Shampoo, P1,099
“I use this dry shampoo every time my super-thick hair gets oily (which is often) or when it just needs a midday boost. I’ve tried a lot of aerosol dry shampoos but this has got to be the best one. The formula doesn’t dry out my hair or leave a sticky, wet residue. The scent is WONDERFUL. The fabulous bottle also makes a great addition to my vanity.” – Erika G.

TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo, P230, Conditioner, P399, and Hair Treatment Mask, P230
“My hair is naturally curly, and when I got it relaxed and colored, I was left with a lot of damage. The Keratin Smooth line is the only thing that was able to bring back that silky, virgin-hair texture. I use the conditioner daily, the shampoo every two days, and the mask once a week. None of these formulas feel heavy my hair, and everything smells super good.” – Ruod A.

My Amazing Blowdry Secret Quick Dry Shake ‘n Spray, P1,998
“Being a mom, I have absolutely no time to blow-dry my long hair. Then I discovered this quick-drying spray, and I’m now able to blow-dry the whole thing in less than five minutes! The spray dries damp hair really fast, even when I’m straight out of the shower. As you can imagine, this frees up so much time in my morning routine—not to mention, leaves my hair looking great!” – Ina G.

Human Nature Clarifying Shampoo, P320
“It has become a habit of mine to use a clarifying shampoo once a week to get rid of all the buildup. Human Nature’s formula is definitely my go-to. Despite being chemical-free, it works up a good, cleansing lather and leaves my hair fragrant. You can’t say the same about most other clarifying shampoos.” – Ysa S.

Bedhead/TIGI Multi Tasking Grooming Cream, P1,300
“I know this styling cream is marketed towards men, but I still love using it. I have long, thick, curly hair that immediately frizzes around the crown with just a hint of humidity. To tame it, I squeeze out a pea-sized amount of cream, rub it between my palms, and smooth it gently over the frizz. Magic! The product really makes that unsightly fluff lay flat all day. It has a soft hold so my hair never feels stiff or ‘crunchy,’ and it smells really nice—not too fruity or sickeningly sweet.” – Steph C.

Made by David Orange and Vanilla Dry Shampoo, P250
“Believe it or not, this is the first dry shampoo I’ve ever used—and I am totally happy with the results. I apply the powder to my scalp after I work out at night. It really removes the sticky, sweaty feeling! It also creates instant volume and has this delicious smell, which is great if I’m going to dinner after the gym.” – Angie G.

Shiseido Super Mild Shampoo and Super Mild Conditioner, P554 each
“This is the gentlest daily shampoo and conditioner set EVER. I love how easily these formulas wash out, especially the conditioner. You’ll never feel like you still have product left in your scalp or clinging to your strands. My hair just feels softer and healthier after I shower. It doesn’t get weighed down because of how light the formula is, so there’s a nice bounce to it as well.” – Joanna T.

VMV Essence Skin-Saving Superwash, P950
“This is the perfect all-around bath product for lazy girls like me. It’s very gentle but still potent enough to remove dirt from my scalp, hair, and skin. What I love the most about this top-to-toe wash is how soft my hair feels after using it. No chemicals!” – Denisse L.

TRESemmé Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo, P450
“Second-day hair, don’t care! This dry shampoo is an excellent life-extender for blowouts, and definitely lives up to its ‘insta-fresh’ claim.” – Sheena A.

Davines Oi | Oil, on sale at P837 (limited time only)
“I’ve spent years trying to tame my unruly, super-dry curls. This is the only product that has ever made a difference. I like to scrunch this through my hair while it’s still damp (the product has a sort of dry-oil feel to it). Once my hair has air-dried, there’s much less frizz! The oil also defines the shape of my natural curls and doesn’t leave a greasy cast unlike every other hair oil I’ve tried.” – Kim V.

Be Organic Gugo Sulfate-Free Shampoo, on sale at P170 (limited time only)
“This really gives my hair the volume and shine I want, even without the chemicals present in most of commercial shampoo products. I used it during my pregnancy. Certified mommy-safe!” – Chai I.

Avalon Organics Tea Tree Scalp Normalizing Conditioner, on sale at P395 (limited time only)
“There was a time this year when my scalp got really irritated due to a shampoo with high chemical content. So I tried this out since it’s made by an organic brand. This tea tree did the trick, reducing the irritation and bringing everything back to normal again. I love its cooling effect and relaxing scent. PS. I use this conditioner with Avalon Organics’ lavender shampoo.” – Nicky M.

PILI Hair Serum, P1,000
“Love the packaging of this local hair serum. The dropper helps me control the amount of product I dispense into my palm every time. The formula itself is lightweight and fast-acting. It smoothens out the texture of my wavy hair immediately, and the scent is just right—a pleasant, nutty aroma that I think organic-lovers will enjoy.” – Erika A.

TRESemmé Extra Hold Hair Spray, P689
“I use this hairspray whenever I tie my hair up. It really tames the flyaways in my ponytail and also keeps my baby hairs in check. The formula has a nice hold, which maintains the shape of my ponytail without turning it to stone. My hair stays neat and sleek the whole day, even when I walk outside and have to battle with the wind.” – Rimina P.
