When it comes to getting summer ready, it’s more than buying swimsuits and making plans to hit the beach! Sometimes, it’s also about making sure your body’s ready to bear everything that comes with scorching weather. Sunglasses for your eyes, sunblock for skin, setting spray for makeup, you know the drill. But what about your underarms? Now that the rising temps can make it even worse for sweaty, stinky pits, what’s a girl to do?
Well, for one, you can go for an antiperspirant, though it isn’t always the best option for your armpits. Some formulas, mostly commercial, can be irritating for sensitive skin and change the microbiome of your underarms (which possibly makes things worse). So if you’re open to other options, you might want to try and stay fresh through an armpit detox.
WHY AN ARMPIT DETOX?
There’s a whole lot of talk going on about antiperspirants. Are they really bad for you? Should you make the switch to natural? All a great topic for another time, but one thing’s for sure: antiperspirants do have a bad rap for being loaded with questionable ingredients. (That includes phthalates, parabens, aluminum, propylene glycol, and who knows what else!)
So if you’ve noticed extra stink and sweat without it, listen to your body. Maybe it’s time to give your pits a break! All that time spent with your antiperspirant could be causing some kind of bacterial imbalance thanks to all the nasty chemicals in your deo. And if there’s any way to go about it, we’d say an armpit detox is a good place to start. This process of drawing out build up and impurities will help your underarms naturally reset and find its way back to a healthier place.
Mind you, this isn’t just a one time big time thing. If you’ve been using your antiperspirant for years, try working this into your routine! Around 2-3 times a week should do the trick. As for how long, it really varies from person to person. But the most important thing you should do is to pay close attention to the changes happening to your body. There might be an adjusting period where you’ll still notice extra stink and sweat than you’re used to, but give it some time. The microbiome of your underarms is just trying to rebalance itself so you no longer have to be hooked to your deo.
We’re not going to lie, this will take time and effort, but we say it’s definitely worth it. And once you notice that your pits are much fresher than they used to be (even without the deo), we’re sure you’ll agree! So without further ado, let’s get started. Peek our take at a simple 3-step armpit detox, below!
1. CLEANSE WITH AN ANTISEPTIC WASH
WE USED: Beauty Bakery Witch Hazel + Tea Tree Gentle Facial Wash, P225
First off, cleanse the underarms with a mild wash to rinse away any dirt and sweat on the skin’s surface. If you can find a formula that’s antiseptic and rich in antioxidants, even better! This Witch Hazel Wash works great because it’s made with pure extracts of witch hazel and tea tree. Together, the two natural astringents target stubborn odor-causing bacteria that live within the skin’s pores and provides natural sweat relief. Just gently massage it in to really help decongest and prep the area before the next step.

2. EXFOLIATE WITH A CLAY MASK
WE USED: Beauty Bakery Charcoal + Clay Scrub Mask, P199
As you may know, applying a clay mask is one of the most effective ways to detoxify your skin. So why not do the same for your armpits? Swipe a thin layer over the area and allow it to absorb the toxins, sweat, and dirt in minutes. To boost the step even more, find a multi-tasking clay mask like this 2-in-1 Charcoal + Clay Scrub Mask! Infused with charcoal, an ingredient known to absorb about 100 to 200 times its weight in impurities, this helps it become the perfect combo for rebalancing your underarms’ microbiome. In other words, it’ll help control smelly odors and excess sweat in the most natural way.

3. CLARIFY WITH A REFRESHING MIST
WE USED: Beauty Bakery Witch Hazel Facial Mist (85ml), P199
Last but not least, calm and refresh skin by spritzing your pits with a clarifying mist! But since not all formulas are made equal, be sure to look out for one that’s packed with skin-refining ingredients. This witch hazel mist is a great example because it’s soothing and infused with tea tree extract, vitamin C, and lemon extract—a powerful antibacterial cocktail for neutralizing excess sweat and foul B.O.
