What does #IWokeUpLikeThis really look like? I don’t know about you, but I am never Beyoncé-flawless when I drag myself out of bed in the morning. My eyes are still puffy from sleep, I’ve got dried-up drool in the corner of my mouth, and I can still make out some of the eyeliner I neglected to wash off last night. In other words, I wake up a hot mess.
Mornings are rough, people, and I’ll be the first to admit that I need help looking like a full-grown adult woman. Help comes, of course, in the form of a kikay kit.
Like many Filipinas, my favorite makeup is the kind that looks like I’m not wearing any at all. It makes a huge difference in how I look and, most importantly, how I feel! That’s the best thing about no-makeup makeup—minimum effort, maximum results. See?
Now, the process differs from girl to girl, but my personal barely-there beauty routine takes only five products (and less than five minutes) to achieve. If you’re sleep-deprived, hung over, or just in need of a confidence boost, check it out!
STEP 1: BASE
Start with a clean face. Distribute a pea-sized amount of product on your forehead, cheeks, chin, the bridge of your nose, and just a little on your neck. Blend evenly!
Whether you opt for full or sheer coverage, make sure the product matches your skin tone. Today, I used It’s Awesome BB Cream by Pink Sugar in Light Warm.
Swirl a fluffy brush into a flattering cheek color and (important!) tap off the excess. Excess product often creates a clownish, overdone cheek, when all you want is to look like you’ve had some sun.
My current favorite blush is Sweet Cheeks HD Cheek Color in Miss Independent, also by Pink Sugar—it’s a very soft, warm shade. I dust it over the apples of my cheeks and outward towards my temples in a circular motion.
3. BROW PENCIL
Next, I fill in the sparse areas of my brows to make them look neater. The idea is to draw light, feathery strokes in the direction of your natural hair growth, and then brush over harsh lines with a spoolie.
For this step, I use the Brow Lash EX Water Strong Eyebrow in Gray Brown, a brow pencil by BCL. If you’re not familiar with this Japanese brand, I’d say Maybelline Fashion Brow Duo Shaper in Brown is very similar.
4. LASH-BOOSTING MASCARA
A good mascara makes a huge change in the size and brightness of your eyes. Don’t be afraid of it!
Every day, I run Maybelline Falsies Mascara over my upper and lower lashes to give them length and volume. And I skip eyeliner altogether, so the eye makeup looks ultra effortless.
5. LIP COLOR
The shade of your lipstick is key to the no-makeup makeup effect. You’ll want a nude that’s a little bit pink (like NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dolce Vita), or, if you’re super tan, a neutral mauve (like City Color Matte to Gloss in Mauve Dazzle).
In this GIF, I’m swiping on Wet n’ Wild Mega Last Lip Color in Rose-Bud—but the most popular shade is In The Flesh, because it looks good on everybody. Don’t Blink Pink is another good alternative!
Tip! If your lippie is matte, don’t forget to use a lip balm underneath it. I used Hurraw Organic Chai Spice Lip Balm, which smells just like a Chai Tea Latte, my favorite pick-me-up drink.
And there you have it! A no-makeup makeup look to make your mornings easier. Fake it ’til you make it, am I right?
