But we’re all too aware that online fashion shopping can be a challenge if you don’t know your measurements. Well, not anymore with this crash course! Just grab a tape measure, follow these easy instructions, and soon, you’ll be online-shopping like a pro—not to mention, rocking clothes that look tailor-made.


  • When measuring yourself, wear tight-fitting clothing (or no clothing at all) so you can get the most accurate numbers.
  • Always leave a little allowance. That typically means leaving space for one finger between the tape and your body.


Stand up straight against a wall.
Make a light mark on the wall at the top of your head.
Measure the distance from the floor to the mark.


Your bust is the circumference of your chest. Place the tape measure over the fullest point of your chest. Wrap it all the way around until you get to the same point.


Measure the circumference of the most narrow part of your torso. This is basically the area where your torso curves inwards on either side.

Tip: Your waist is typically one inch above your belly button.


Use your hipbones as your reference. Hold the end of the tape measure over one hipbone and wrap it all the way around (crossing over the top of your butt, your other hipbone, and your lower tummy) until it reaches the same point.


Measure the distance from the very end of one shoulder to the very end of the other. You can use your shoulder bones as the start and end points.


Measure the distance between your belly button and the bottom of your crotch.


Wear a pair of tight-fitting leggings. Measure the distance from the crotch seam to the end of one pant leg.


Measure the circumference of the widest part of your upper arm.


Measure the circumference of your armpit. Start from your shoulder bone, wrap the tape measure around your armpit, and end at the same point.


Tilt your head forward. Find the bone at the base of your nape.
Measure the distance from that bone to the base of your spine. (The base of your spine will line up with your hipbones.)


Measure the circumference of the widest part of your upper thigh.

Tip: Don’t go past your bikini line!
