As a certified “It Girl” and the creative mastermind behind everything Sunnies Studios, Martine Cajucom is a force to be reckoned with. And if you follow her on Instagram, then you’re no stranger to her impeccable taste and natural eye for aesthetics. This innate sensibility extends to pretty much everything else in her life—including, of course, her beauty choices.
But beyond the picture-perfect feed, Martine’s personal routines are as low-maintenance as they come. No wonder TRESemmé hand-picked her to be on their roster of stylish TRESetters! With Martine’s silky strands and no-fuss approach to hair care, it’s pretty much a match made in heaven. BeautyMNL caught up with the girlboss herself to discuss all things hair and beauty—from her must-have products to her pre-wedding prep. Here’s what she had to say!
Take us through your usual hair care routine. What are your non-negotiables?
MARTINE: “My usual hair care routine is very low-maintenance, casual. It’s a wake-up-and-go kinda situation. My non-negotiables are using dry shampoo in the morning, just to shake off the excess oil, and I like to use the TRESemmé dry shampoo.”
What’s your quick fix for a bad hair day?
MARTINE: A hat!
Do you consider your hair to be an essential part of your signature style?
MARTINE: “Oh, I absolutely do. It’s very easy to style in an effortless way and I think that’s really reflective of my personal style.”
Is there any one hairstyle or hair color you’ve always wanted to try, but haven’t made the jump yet?
MARTINE: “I’ve done my fair share of experimentation. Like, I’ve cut it short, I’ve dyed it blonde, I’ve gotten bangs—I’ve done a whole spectrum of things. I’ve always wanted to have pink hair, but I never fully committed to it and I think maybe that’s a good thing! I appreciate that my hair is thick and healthy and shiny, and I felt like I didn’t want to do anything that would cause it any damage, even if I would have liked the trend.”
Every woman has at least one salon- or hair-related horror story. What’s your worst one and how did you recover from it?
MARTINE: “It’s a classic hair-related horror story: I asked for a mild trim and got a Jennifer Aniston, choppy bob cut. Needless to say, I was crying in my seat and it was terribly embarrassing. (Laughs.) I just grew it out and never went back to the salon.”
Since you get to work with hair stylists all the time for shoots, what’s the best hair care tip you’ve learned from the pros?
MARTINE: “The best hair care tip I’ve learned from the pros is really the simplest one of all and it’s brushing your hair, and taking the time to do that. Because that’s what feeds your hair as well, like removing the oils from your scalp all the way to the end. It’s something people tend to neglect and I admittedly forget to brush my hair as well. But it really is important. It’s basic and it’s simple and it does feed your hair.”
What are your top 3 hair products for traveling?
MARTINE: “I do really like the TRESemmé dry shampoo, a really good brush—like a Mason Pearson brush—and the TRESemmé Detox & Nourish Shampoo. It has ginger and green tea in it, and it’s really good for antioxidants. Especially when you’re traveling, you know, you’re getting pollutants in your hair and it helps restore it. I also like the dry shampoo because it’s a quick fix. It adds texture and volume into your hair. And in terms of a good brush, you only need one your whole life, so invest in one!” What beauty products do you hoard the most?
MARTINE: “I hoard a lot of serums and lipsticks! I particularly love how serums make my skin really plump and I love playing with colors, so that’s why I have a deep love for lipsticks.”
A lot of women say they put on makeup when they’re particularly down in the dumps or just need a quick pick-me-up. When you don’t feel your best, what’s one product that can automatically turn that around?
MARTINE: “Honestly, a good blow-out! More so than makeup, actually. Like, getting my hair done and blown out professionally. When I have good hair, I do feel better about myself when it’s styled nicely.”
Are there any beauty items that are very sentimental or nostalgic for you?
MARTINE: “Yeah, I would say Sunnies Face Fluffmatte, definitely! When I see it in someone’s makeup bag, it brings me so much joy, like on another level. Launching our first beauty product is very sentimental for me.” How did you prep your hair and skin for your wedding day?
MARTINE: “For my skin, I did a lot of treatments at Belo. I did a diamond peel and resurfacing laser, and I did a lot of masks and a lot of just conditioning and massaging my skin. In terms of my hair, I use a lot of the Keratin Smooth Shampoo and Keratin Smooth Flat Iron Spray, just because I wanted my hair to be really smooth and gorgeous on my wedding day. I just wanted to look like the glowiest and freshest version of myself.” Photos via TRESemmé and Instagram (@martine).
