When you think of chiseling your face and de-puffing your cheeks, the first thing that probably comes to mind is “diet.” But what if I told you that wasn’t necessarily the only way to a slimmer face? And before you ask, no, I’m not talking about contouring. I’m talking about jade rolling.

The jade roller is a health and skincare tool that’s been part of Chinese beauty regimens since the 7th century. Like many Eastern cultures, the ancient Chinese believed in crystal healing, or the power of precious stones to promote health, beauty, and well-being through their unique energy. Now, before your eyes roll to the back of your head, science says it can work—at least, when it comes to jade stones specifically.
So, back to jade rollers! The best of these dual-ended wands are crafted in high quality green jade, a stone that benefits both the mind and body. Using this age-old contraption has been known to tone and firm the skin, boost elasticity, improve blood circulation, and promote lymphatic drainage—all of which can lead to slimmer, tighter facial contours. Think of jade rolling as a workout for your face, but unlike an intense spinning class, it feels like a massage. And all you have to do is roll this thing across your face for several minutes to reap its benefits.

Of course, I understand that this might seem a little gimmicky to most people. So, I tried it out for a week! Find my quick demo and final thoughts on jade rollers below.

STEP 1: The jade roller can be used as the final step in your skincare regimen. In my case, that meant it followed my moisturizer in the mornings and my night cream in the evenings.

STEP 2: Roll the bigger jade stone over your nose, foreheads, cheeks, and chin. Roll it over each area three to four times, and use gentle pressure. Repeat for as long as you have time.

STEP 3: Roll the smaller jade stone around your eyes and other delicate areas of the face. Repeat the same process as Step 2.

TIP: For extra de-puffing action, place the jade roller in the fridge before every use.

After using the jade roller for about a week, all I can say is that I’m hooked! It’s so easy to use and extremely relaxing. More importantly, I’ve noticed an improvement in my puffiness, especially around the eyes. The skin underneath them looks brighter and less “baggy”. The face-chiseling effects have been subtle so far—I can’t necessarily see a difference, but I can feel it in my skin. It feels stronger and bouncier. Again, it’s only been a week, so just like any exercise regimen, you need to jade-roll continuously to see big results.

So far, what I love most is about the roller how it feels. The jade stone is cool on the skin, even when I forget to put in the fridge. Every roll loosens up my facial muscles while tightening up my skin (oddly enough), and leaves me less tense.
As a simple solution to tone your face without dieting or contouring, I would definitely recommend jade-rolling. It doesn’t require that much work, plus, you could always use the facial massage to jumpstart your morning routine or squeeze in a little self-care after a long day.
