In case you missed BeautyMNL’s Guide to Detox, I’m just going to say this again: activated charcoal is the darling of the health and wellness scene. Found in everything from cleansing drinks to clarifying skincare, this dark horse has been dubbed a miracle cure. Because of its “adsorption” properties, it acts like a sponge to remove impurities from the body. And that’s very, very good.
Recently, activated charcoal has become even more popular for another reason: dental hygiene. Believe it or not, this jet-black powder can actually whiten your teeth by removing surface stains. And who would say no to a brighter smile the au naturel way? Not me!
Thanks to my close relationship with coffee, wine, and chocolates, my teeth could definitely use a bit of whitening. So for this experiment, I brushed them with activated charcoal twice a day, every day, for a week. GO BLACK was kind enough to send me a tub of their AC Pure, a 100% organic, food-grade activated charcoal powder made of high-quality coconut shells. It’s free from parabens, sulfates, silicones, scents, and more—so all you natural lovers are sure to be impressed.

HOW TO USE IT

So how did I incorporate activated charcoal into my dental hygiene routine? I used a double-brushing technique. First, I dampened the bristles of my toothbrush and sprinkled a pinch of powder on top. I brushed my teeth with this for about 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing out my mouth. Then, I brushed my teeth a second time using regular toothpaste. This second round was mostly to get rid of the residue, and I used very gentle pressure so as not to over-brush.

WHAT TO EXPECT

TASTE, FEEL, AND LOOK: Activated charcoal doesn’t have a taste, but the sand-like texture can be quite off-putting at first. Oh, and if you’re squeamish about seeing yourself in the mirror with black teeth, I suggest you keep your mouth as closed as possible. Distract yourself as you brush (I used Netflix!). Be careful not to brush too hard since doing so might damage your teeth’s enamel.

CLEANSE: My mouth always felt squeaky-clean every time I brushed with activated charcoal. I will admit, however, that I longed for the minty-fresh aftertaste of regular toothpaste. So I was happy that I got to brush my teeth a second time, every time.
WHITENING EFFECT: Over the course of 7 days, I noticed a gradual and natural-looking brightening of my teeth. Unlike some expensive teeth whitening treatments, my chompers didn’t end up looking artificially white. Just fresher and less stained!

BEST PRACTICES

CLEAN AS YOU GO: One thing I must share about brushing with activated charcoal is that it can be a very messy process. The black powder will go everywhere (into your nails, on top of your clothes, all over the bathroom sink) if you’re not careful. This will take some getting used to. But once you get the hang of it—you know, lay out some rags, have wipes on hand—a few extra minutes of cleanup won’t be too bad.

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT: The amount of activated charcoal I used in 7 days wasn’t much at all. I was so impressed with my GO BLACK AC Pure—I could tell after just one week that my jar would last for a long time. Keep in mind that you can use activated charcoal for so much more than teeth-whitening—like a light detox or a hangover cure. Such a great find!

THE VERDICT

Yes, activated charcoal will whiten your teeth—it just takes an extra step in your daily dental hygiene. I would definitely recommend using it if you can squeeze that step in. Activated charcoal powder is a natural, affordable alternative to pricy whitening strips and treatments. It might take some time getting used to, but you’ll see results in one week! Imagine what can happen if you use it for a whole month?
