Clean, bright teeth always make a girl look noticeably fresh. Just take a gander at our girl crush, Hannah Simone, who plays Cece on New Girl—and basically every other beauty on TV these days.

Alas, not everyone is blessed with the pearliest of pearly whites. Yellow teeth are usually caused by food and drink stains from coffee, black tea, wine, dark sauces, sugary treats, and even some fruits and vegetables. Discoloration also occurs when your teeth come in contact with too much acidity. This wears away the naturally white enamel of your teeth, revealing more of the yellowish dentin layer underneath. Boo!

That’s not to say you can’t have whiter teeth—at least, temporarily. Where there’s a will, there’s a way! Here are three tricks to polish up your toothy grin without having to set foot in the dentist’s office.

Catherine Zeta-Jones reportedly does this before every red carpet! Crush a strawberry into a paste, then rub it all over your teeth. The fruit will lift stains for a whiter, brighter smile. Brush your teeth immediately after with regular toothpaste.

A blue-based red will contrast against any yellow pigmentation in your teeth, making them look whiter. What in the world is a “blue-based” red, you ask? These are reds that belong to the cool-toned color family, like blood red, wine red, or berry shades. Try Chanel Pirate, NARS Mascate, or Max Factor Deep Burgundy. Put down that tube of trendy orange for now—it’ll only make your teeth look more yellow.

Oil pulling has been a pretty hot topic ever since all-natural guru Gwyneth Paltrow revealed it as her teeth-whitening secret. But this isn’t just another crazy celebrity fad—oil pulling is actually an ancient Ayurvedic practice for oral health. Basically, you swirl pure oil or an oil-based mouthwash in your mouth for (brace yourself!) 20 minutes. We know that’s a long time, but if you do it in the shower, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Check out Gwyn’s squeaky-clean chompers and keep your eyes on the prize! Swish, swish.
