With things heating up this month, we’re sure you’ll have more reasons than one for wanting your lipstick to stay where it’s meant to be. So to save yourself the trouble of retouching every now and then, we’ll walk you through a few extra steps that’ll keep your lipstick locked in place all day long—no matter what you’re doing. Scroll!
STEP 1: PREP YOUR LIPS THE NIGHT BEFORE
First things first, you’ll want to start off with kissably soft lips—and nothing speeds up the process faster than an ultra hydrating, overnight lip treatment. Cap off your nightly routine with a thin, even layer and let it work its magic by daylight. We especially like Laneige’s Lip Sleeping Mask, formulated with Berry Mix Complex rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, for that deeply nourishing and irresistibly fuller effect.
WE RECOMMEND: Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask (3g), P250
STEP 2: LIGHTLY EXFOLIATE AND MOISTURIZE
Naturally, it’s much easier for lipstick to hold on for longer when dry flakes and dead skin aren’t in the way. So to rid yourself of crusty, chapped lips, lightly exfoliate with a sugar scrub and top it with a deeply conditioning balm. Try to go over the lips as gently as possible to prevent unexpected snags, tears, and bleeding. (And don’t forget to wipe away the excess balm before moving to the next step!)
WE RECOMMEND: Danni Parcca Lip Scrub & Breath Mint, P250, Lucas Papaw Ointment Tube with Lip Applicator (15g), P499
STEP 3: FILL AND LINE WITH A LIP LINER
When you don’t line your lips, the lipstick you wear tends to bleed beyond the edges. But what keeps the overall look clean isn’t simply tracing the outer perimeter of your mouth, it’s also filling them in. Doing so creates an even base for your lipstick to grip onto and acts like a primer to lock everything in place. Whether that means a clear liner, one in a shade close to the lippie you want to wear, or one in a completely contrasting color, it’s your call to experiment around and see what will work well with your chosen favorite.
WE RECOMMEND: Issy & Co. Lipstick Pen, P299
STEP 4: GO FOR LONG-WEARING FORMULAS
It goes without saying that certain formulas are bound to last longer than others. Matte lipsticks, for one, are less likely to budge as they’re essentially less slippery and emollient. Lip stains are another sought-after alternative thanks to its comfortable, lightweight base. Plus, once the rich pigment sets, it’ll stay on your lips for hours on end.
WE RECOMMEND: Rom&nd Lip Driver, P700, Ofra Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick, P850, Benefit Gogotint + Chachatint Dual-Ended Lip Tint Duo, P1,300
STEP 5: BLOT AND SET LIP WEAR IN PLACE
Lastly, seal the deal by blotting away excess moisture, shine, and formula that could make your lip wear slide out of place. Avoid the usual sticky, tacky feeling, too, by lightly dusting on translucent powder over a thin layer of tissue above your lipstick, and continue blotting until your lips are fully set.
WE RECOMMEND: Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder, P599
THE KISS-TRANSFER TEST
With that said, now let’s put it to the test. Here, we asked 3 girls from the BeautyMNL office to try the step-by-step guide above wearing different types of lip formulas: one with a powdery-matte finish, a velvety-matte finish, and a smooth, lip stain finish. After each person has fully prepped and set their lips, we asked them to kiss the back of their hand to see whether there were any signs of transfer. Scroll for the results!
