Matte lips are all the rage these days, which means brands like Maybelline are coming up with more exciting matte formulas (and bolder, trendier shades). Their latest bid in the world of mattes is the new Velvet Matte by Color Sensational (P299), a “cream-to-matte” lip color that offers intense pigmentation and hydration. Yes, as the name suggests, these lippies promise moisture in spite of their matte finish. And yes, my dears, they deliver on this oath! You won’t need to use lip balm underneath this formula to keep your kissers moist and plump.
I love the buttery texture of this lipstick. It glides dreamily on the lips and doesn’t have a goopy, glossy texture. Unlike other cream-based matte lippies, Velvet Matte doesn’t have that powdery, rough feel once it dries (you know what I mean!). It does have a sheen when freshly applied but turns matte once it dries in about half an hour.
Pigmentation is a winner, as I only need to swipe once to render all the colors completely opaque. Staying power is average at 3 to 4 hours. These colors don’t completely settle, which I suppose is so that your lips won’t dry up (the way they do with other matte formulas). The lippies are scentless. Honestly, if you didn’t know they were from a drugstore brand, you would never guess because of the intense pigmentation, luxe texture, and lack of fragrance!

Overall, I think the Maybelline Velvet Matte is a total steal at P299. You’ve got to try it! Below, check out my quick color notes on the shades I have, to better help you choose your new fave color. Let me know what you think!
MAT 1 is a pretty bombshell pink color. It’s not too neon and is warm enough to suit all skin tones.
MAT 2 is a hot pink very similar to MAT 1, but it has a warmer tone and a peachier tint to it.
MAT 5 is a fiery red orange that makes me think of summer. This is a great rainy day gloom-buster. Plus, it’s a rare orange that would actually look good on most skin tones.
MAT 6 is a gorgeous berry that looks utterly sophisticated and ready for the fall season. It’s not too dark which makes it wearable compared to similar new shades.
MAT 8 is a warm red, similar to MAT 5 but with a lot less orange to it. This is a great color for warm yellow skin tones!
MAT 9 is a tomato red, a tad deeper than MAT 8. Go for this if you want something more classic.
MAT 10 is a girly orchid pink with a tint of lavender. So girly and very much on trend! Try this if you want a pink that stands out.
MAT 11 is one of the most beautiful reds I’ve come across in a while. It’s a classic blue-based retro red that will never go out of style!
Care for a nude? Try MAT 12 for nudey-peach lips that won’t wash you out, even if you’re morena.
