Busted! 6 Beauty Myths That Are Actually Lies
Today’s beauty universe is a goldmine of information, but how do we differentiate the nuggets of wisdom from the little white lies? Take everything with a grain of salt, that’s how—even if you heard it from your mother! Below, we listed 6 of the most common misconceptions that plenty of people (including us!) thought to be true.
1. BRUSHING YOUR HAIR 100 TIMES MAKES IT SHINY.
Marcia Brady fell for it, too! A hundred strokes a day isn’t just impractical—it can weaken your strands and eventually lead them to fall out.
2. WEARING MAKEUP EVERY DAY IS BAD FOR YOUR SKIN.
Wrong! The real culprit behind breakouts is bad hygiene, so be sure to wash off all your face paint before bed. Here’s our step-by-step guide.
3. SWITCHING SHAMPOOS IMPROVES YOUR HAIR.
Before we get into that, here’s a fun fact: your hair is actually dead. Excluding the hair follicle in your dermis, the shaft (or the long part that extends past your scalp) is not considered “living”—so it actually doesn’t adapt to anything at all. If you’ve been finding your hair dry, brittle, greasy, or heavy lately, the problem might not be your shampoo, but product buildup on your scalp. In which case, try a clarifying shampoo and stick to it!
4. THE HIGHER THE SPF, THE LONGER YOU CAN STAY OUT.
The SPF rating in your products is not an indication of how long you can stay under the sun, but rather, how well the product protects you from it. Your best option is to look for an SPF that protects you from UVA and UVB rays (read our Ultimate Guide to SPF for more info.). Either way, you are still encouraged to reapply sunscreen every two hours especially if you are always outdoors.
5. PUMPING YOUR MASCARA GETS YOU MORE PRODUCT.
Nope, nope, nope. When you push your wand in and out of the tube repeatedly, you are actually drying out your mascara and making the formula break down more quickly. On top of that, pumping allows more bacteria to get into the tube, which can lead to nasty eye infections. Ick! The best way to get the most out of your mascara is to layer it on little by little and rotate the wand if you need more product.
6. SHAVING MAKES YOUR HAIR GROW BACK THICKER.
Myth! It might feel thicker, but the truth is that it’s just sharper. Why? Shaving cuts hair at a blunt angle, which makes the emerging stubble more obvious to the touch—not to the sight.
