THIS WEEK’S SKINQUIRY
Helen: “Can your skin really be ‘whitened’ or brightened? What exactly happens to your skin to make it change appearance when you use whitening products?”
THIS WEEK’S DERMA
NAME: Kyla M. Talens, M.D., DCD, MSc
CLINIC: Skin Philosophie (Taguig)
DR. KYLA SAYS: Skin lightening can be accomplished in several ways. The first step is to protect your skin from UV rays. Sun avoidance is key, especially from 9AM to 4PM. Application of sunscreen even when indoors is a must, too, because UV can penetrate through glass windows. Even when it’s cloudy or raining, there’s still UV—and you must remember that it’s different from visible light. These are essential because UV rays stimulate the formation of melanin (skin pigment).
The next step is to undergo procedures or use products that inhibit melanin production. There are several options out there. At Skin Philosophie, we administer IV glutathione. This ensures that the new skin produced contains less melanin—but IV glutathione does not do anything to the melanin that’s already there.
That is why I advise complementing it with exfoliating procedures. Exfoliation involves the removal of dead skin cells that contain pigments to reveal the lighter skin underneath. Skin Philosophie has several in-clinic treatments that include exfoliation. Patients can choose from either chemical or mechanical exfoliation.
Our Whitening Facial is one treatment that includes both types: AHA gel application and diamond microdermabrasion. To cap it off, we also administer Vitamin C through ionto-infusion. Vitamin C is a nutrient known to lessen melanin formation. However, it’s made of relatively big molecules, which is why ordinary application leads to inefficient absorption. The use of our iontophoresis device facilitates its delivery to the deeper layers of the skin.
Lasers can also help lighten the skin. Pigments are directly targeted when we perform laser whitening.
When it comes to skin lightening, always set realistic expectations. The “whitest” that you can get is similar to the skin tone on your least sun-exposed body parts—like the breasts, for example. And after spending on lightening treatments, always make sure to protect your skin against UV rays with sunscreen. This will help preserve your investment.
