There’s no question that sunscreen is a must in an everyday routine. And if it’s a part of yours, then you’re already doing your skin a huge favor! But apparently, there is a chance that your skin isn’t as guarded as you think, even with sun protection.

According to the FDA guidelines, the standard amount you should be using is 2mg of sunscreen per square centimeter of exposed skin. Of course, not everyone has the time to actually measure their face to see how much sunscreen they’re going to need. And checking the instructions on the back of bottles don’t help, either. (How much can you “liberally apply”?) But luckily, there does seem to be a general rule people follow when you want to make sure you’re getting enough.
To help you out, we came up with a little cheat sheet that’ll let you know exactly how much sunscreen you need depending on the kind that you have. From sun sticks to sun lotions, scroll to see the breakdown, below!

HOW MUCH YOU’LL NEED: 2-4 passes back and forth
WHAT WE USED: Banila Co. Hello Sunny Essence Sun Stick Glow, P1,150
If most sunscreen formulas aren’t your cup of tea, sun sticks might change your mind. They’re non-greasy, easy to apply, and super convenient if you need to touch up on the go. But if you’re having trouble pinning down exactly how much you need, an accepted rule is to run 2-4 passes over every area, then rub it in. That way, you’ll get an even coat of sun protection that’s sure to leave you covered.

HOW MUCH YOU’LL NEED: 2-8 seconds of continuous spraying
WHAT WE USED: Skinpro ActiveHealth SKINPRO Sunscreen Spray, P590
The golden rule of sunscreen is to reapply the stuff every 2 hours, especially if you know you’re going to be directly exposed to the sun. So to make things less of a pain, go for a sunblock spray. These mists effortlessly cover different areas of your body in literally seconds, which is perfect since that’s precisely how you can base the amount you need!

Of course, this will depend on the body part you’ll be spritzing. For the torso and back, at least 5-8 seconds of continuous spraying is recommended, while limbs can get around 2-4 seconds each. But just like sun sticks, about 4 passes back and forth can also be applied to each body area to get your fill of UV protection.

Sometimes, there’s nothing that can beat good ol’ sunblock lotion. Though let us tell you, you’re going to need a lot of it. (Like a full shot glass worth.) But before you think it sounds a bit much, keep in mind that this is meant to keep you sun protected from head to toe. That means your neck, arms, legs, chest, back, and pretty much every exposed part of your face and body. Tell your skin to drink up!

HOW MUCH YOU’LL NEED (FACE AND NECK): 1/3 to 1/2 teaspoon or a coin-sized dollop
WHAT WE USED: Face Republic Super Screen Sun Gel SPF 50+ (50ml), now on sale at P499 (limited time only)
Let’s say, most of your sunscreen is reserved for your face and neck—how much are you going to need? Well, the standard is usually around 1/3 to 1/2 teaspoon. (Which at first doesn’t seem like much, but you’d be surprised!) So to ease your way into, y’know, applying this amount onto your skin, start off by spreading a light layer over the face and neck. Don’t forget the ears, inner corners of the eyes, and eyelids, too! Then, once you’ve given the sunblock a few minutes to absorb, apply a slightly thinner layer with the remaining amount you have left.
