Season after season, trends change into new trends, and us beauty junkies like to join the bandwagon. After years of barely-there makeup, the “gym-skin” dewy aura, and loose beach waves, we’re moving on to a bolder, more luxurious take on beauty. Here are seven trends you might want to try, as seen on the runways of recent fashion weeks (and heard backstage at my own shows and shoots!).

1. HEAD-TO-CHIN SLEEK

Backstage report: Perfect skin, flushed cheeks, “clean” makeup, and well-defined hair will be taking over.
The pegs: Prada (makeup by Pat McGrath, hair by Guido Palau) and Tanya Taylor (makeup by NARS)
HERE’S MY TAKE!
Tip! Slick your hair down with this wonder wax.

2. SMUDGY BLACK EYELINER

Backstage report: Go all out gothic, or move your application of the liner from the top lid to the bottom, right into the waterline.
The peg: Roberto Cavalli
HERE’S MY TAKE!
Tip! This soft eye pencil has a smudger on the other end so you don’t have to get your fingers dirty.

3. THE ANTI-RED LIP

Backstage report: Gasp! Give the classic red lippie a rest? Sort of. Instead of the usual ruby, try dark berry reds and elegant violets.
The pegs: Marc Jacobs (makeup by NARS)
HERE’S MY TAKE!
Tip! Wet n’ Wild’s Cherry Bomb is an almost exact match to that vampiric Marc Jacobs inspiration photo.

4. THE RETURN OF LIP GLOSS

Backstage report: I confess I’m not a fan of glossy lips because they tend to look like you kissed a bottle of oil! But after seeing the shiny mouth make a huge comeback on the runways (and in the music video for Bad Blood), I might just have to change my mind.
The peg: Fendi…and Taylor Swift
HERE’S MY TAKE!
Tip! Try this tube if you like a really wet-looking shine.

5. NICE KNOTS

Backstage report: Another alternative to loose waves is a chic knot, undone in the style of a messy chignon.
The pegs: Fendi and Chanel
HERE’S MY TAKE!
Tip! If your hair is the opposite of mine and tends not to hold its shape, set your top knot with a generous dose of hairspray.

6. CHUNKY—YES, CHUNKY—LASHES

Backstage report: I’ve seen makeup artists cringe when your mascara clumps together. Which is why it’s kind of surprising that this season, they’re layering coat upon coat of mascara for this dollish, punkish look. The proper beauty term for this, apparently, is “spider lashes.”
The peg: Giambattista Valli (makeup by Val Garland)
HERE’S MY TAKE!
Tip! For this look, forego a defining mascara (which is designed to separate your lashes) and go for a fattening formula instead.

7. MASCULINE BROWS

Backstage report: From brushed-up brows, the obsession moves to caveman-chic. #BelieveIt
The peg: Christopher Kane x NARS
HERE’S MY TAKE!
Tip! Pack on the brow powder for this look.
