ICYMI, underarm care was a hot beauty topic in 2019. On BeautyMNL, we covered everything from detoxing your ‘pits to the best ways to tackle body hair. We even whipped up a beginner’s guide to armpit care, for anyone looking to build their own routine!

Naturally, we left 2019 with more kili-kili pro tips than we know what to do with. So, if you need a quick refresher (or if you’re just looking for a new place to start), we’ve rounded up 9 underarm care tips we’ve tried, tested, and proven effective. Throw your arms up for 2020!

TIP #1: NOTHING BEATS SOAP AND WATER

The perfect cleanser is at the heart of any good skincare routine, and it goes double for your underarms. Throughout the day, your pits become moist with sweat, making them a breeding ground for odor-causing bacteria. So, it’s good practice to lather up and cleanse the area thoroughly with every shower, ideally with a gentle yet antibacterial soap.
WE RECOMMEND: Skin Genie Apple Cider Vinegar Soap, P150

TIP #2: INGROWN HAIRS MAY BE PREVENTED BY EXFOLIATING

If you groom your pits (whether that means shaving, plucking, or waxing them) regularly, you may have had trouble with ingrown hairs. One easy way to prevent this is to make sure you’re buffing away dead skin cells after getting rid of hairs. Dead skin can block the opening of hair follicles, which makes it harder for hair to grow out smoothly. By exfoliating two to three times a week, you’re priming the surface of your skin of optimal hair growth.
WE RECOMMEND: Skin Genie Pit Perfect Scrub, P200

TIP #3: CLAY MASKS ARE GOOD FOR A FULL DETOX

Pits not adjusting to that all-natural and oh-so-gentle deo you just picked up? Or maybe your sweat-proofing deo just isn’t working like it used to? If you’d been using antiperspirants laden with chemicals meant to plug your sweat ducts, chances are your armpits need to detox first. You can speed up their adjustment by treating the to a purging clay mask. It’ll draw out impurities with every application, so your pits stay fresh for longer.
WE RECOMMEND: Nutrifam Indian Healing Clay, P380

TIP #4: NATURAL DEOS ARE MUCH GENTLER ON YOUR PITS

Sweating is as natural to our bodies as breathing, so there’s really no need to put a plug in it. If you’re concerned about body odor, try natural deodorants that are aluminum-free, as they’ll keep you fresh without keeping your pits unnaturally plugged up. Ultimately, if you think your underarms get too sweaty, you might want to consider investing in a full underarm care routine to treat the issue.
WE RECOMMEND: Zero Basics Deodorant (250ml), P250

TIP #5: TONING CAN CALM, RE-BALANCE, AND BRIGHTEN

Toners can do as much for your underarms as they do for your face, helping re-balance your skin with every swipe. This means that while daily stressors can throw your skin’s pH off, a good toner can minimize the damage by regulating your pH levels. There are plenty of variants depending on your needs, but we love antibacterial formulas that can cleanse, calm, and even brighten our pits with every use.
WE RECOMMEND: Skin Genie Apple Cider Vinegar Toner, P250

TIP #6: MOISTURIZING AFTER TREATMENTS IS CRUCIAL

If you’ve ever gotten a wax, we’re sure you know that anti-inflammatory creams must be applied over freshly waxed areas. Not only does it help soothe irritation and redness, it also minimizes ingrown hairs. For something extra cooling and gentle, a pure aloe vera gel is a great moisturizer option for your pits. It’s lightweight and absorbs quickly, so you can slather it on and be out the door in seconds. No “sweat” stains to be seen!
WE RECOMMEND: Aloderma Pure Aloe Vera Gel, P600

TIP #7: ALWAYS SHAVE IN THE DIRECTION OF HAIR GROWTH

Shaving is far from the best way to get rid of unwanted body hair, but it is one of the most convenient. So, if it’s your go-to option, just be sure to shave strategically. Shave with the direction of your hair growth and not against the grain, in order to avoid razor burn and ingrown hairs from coming in.
WE RECOMMEND: Sasha Razor Komachi (4 Blade), P99

TIP #8: BREATHABLE FABRICS CAN GIVE YOUR PITS A BREAK

So, you’ve given your underarms a detox, but it’s yet to solve your sweating problem. If you find yourself constantly sweating through your clothes, it might be a good idea to switch to clothes that don’t restrict airflow. Lightweight materials (think cotton and linen) will air out your pits, so it will lessen the amount of moisture it traps. Less moisture, less room for bacteria!

TIP #9: UNDERARMS DESERVE THEIR OWN ROUTINE

You don’t have to go all-in all at once—sometimes, applying just one or two top tips (like the ones listed above!) can do a world of difference. If your antiperspirant is causing you trouble, go natural. If your underarm hair is growing out in a weird way, switch up the way you groom. Whatever it is, just find however many or few steps you need to be comfortable in your skin, and stick to ‘em. You and your underarms deserve the TLC!
