7 Ways to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain
Let’s be real: we all gain a little weight over the holidays. I myself am guilty of gaining at least five pounds. It’s always so hard resisting all the mouthwatering dishes. (Most especially the cookies!)
So while it is the time to indulge, it is important to do so in moderation. Because, really, who wants to start 2018 worrying about shedding extra weight? Not me! Luckily, it’s possible to celebrate the holiday session without piling on the pounds.
Here are 7 ways I’m going to get through it. (You can do it, too!)
1. DON’T SKIP MEALS
Skipping meals to save our stomachs for the party food doesn’t usually go according to plan. More often than not, we end up eating way more than expected—A.K.A., binge eating.
2. EAT AND CHEW SLOWLY
Fact: it takes 20 minutes for our brains to tell our stomachs we are full. So whenever we wolf down our food, imagine just how much we’re eating. (Spoiler alert: a lot!) Slow down, savoring each and every bite. You might even make room for dessert.
3. LOAD UP ON H20
Skip the soda and drink water instead. This will help you feel full, helping you reduce the amount of calories you consume.
4. SET REALISTIC GOALS
Write down your goals and put them in a place you can see them every single day. I have plenty of Post-Its stuck to my pantry door. This helps me second-guess the junk food I want, staving off any cravings I might regret later.
5. CAVE INTO CRAVINGS
Yes, you read that right! I personally follow the 3-bite rule to satisfy my sweet tooth. As the rule states, “you’ll get that amazing first taste, a satisfying middle one, and then a lingering third bite.” But don’t forget, everything in moderation!
6. LIMIT YOUR BOOZE
Unbeknownst to many alcohol can add up the calories—fast. And sometimes, when you’ve had one too many, it can be easier to break other rules you set for yourself. So if you want to enjoy without the risk, stick to a glass or two.
7. STAY ACTIVE
Exercise is probably the last thing you’ll want to do during the holidays, but try to keep moving. At least make a conscious effort to take the stairs, carry your groceries yourself, or walk a little bit more. My favorite trick? Doing 15 minutes of skip-rope at home.
And there you have it, ladies—happy holidays!
