From miracle toners that cleared skin in days to the major hype surrounding crystal rollers, skincare in 2018 definitely had its moments to remember. But now that we’re at the last stretch of January 2019, we can’t help but wonder—what’s the next big thing?
Well, it seems that minimalism, sustainability, and customization are just some things to look forward to for good skin days ahead. Scroll to see more on how you can stay ahead of the curve!
Let’s face it, more steps don’t necessarily mean more results. And whether this all happened because the 10-steps routine was overwhelming or too difficult to commit to, minimalism is making a comeback with more hardworking and multifunctional skin staples. A couple of brands are already ahead of the game with favorites like exfoliating toners and brightening peels, but we’re definitely psyched to see what’s yet to come. Before we know it, maybe we’ll even make do with 3 steps in a routine. Maybe.

- Neogen Bio-Peel Gauze Peeling Lemon, P1,100
The world is dying and everyone is trying to make better decisions to keep that from happening. So, apart from metal straws and bamboo toothbrushes, skincare brands are also playing their part to save the earth. How so? Better packaging. We’re talking reusable, recyclable, biodegradable, you name it. And not only that, but brands are also working with nature for more eco-friendly formulas. From being sustainably-sourced to reducing ingredients toxic to the environment, all these conscious decisions will pave the way for more mindful and conscious skincare to surface.
- PHB Ethical Beauty Gentle Jojoba Bead Exfoliator with Coconut & Argan, P1,125
- Kalikhasan Eco-Friendly Lotion (250ml) Haliya Body Lotion, P420
3. CLEARER, CLEANER INGREDIENT LISTS
Say hello to more transparency this 2019! In light of brands becoming more honest and eco-friendly, we can hope for cleaner and greener formulas with less toxic ingredients. In other words? Ingredient lists that are easier to understand and free from parabens, phthalates, sulfates, synthetics, and other preservatives. Not only that, but the approach is now smarter too, with higher concentrations of fewer active ingredients instead of a product that has a little bit of everything. Thanks for leading the way, The Ordinary!
- V&M Naturals CPC+G Oil (30ml), P350
- Leiania House of Beauty TeaFresh Organic Face Oil Blotting Paper, P135
4. POLLUTION-FIGHTING SKINCARE
While we all have an idea of how polluted it can get in the city, it’s also quite hard to pinpoint just how bad it actually is. As you might know, pollution is a huge skin aggressor that can lead to heightened skin sensitivity, premature ageing, and even hyperpigmentation. A way to one-up the situation is through powerful antioxidants that combat free radical damage your skin is exposed to during the day. Some brands, like Kiehls and Human Nature, are already on it, but we’re keeping our eyes peeled for more brands to follow suit.
- Simple Pollution Protect Sheet Mask (21ml), P89
- Human Nature Natural Pollution Defense Hydrating Emulsion (50ml), P350
5. BETTER SUNSCREEN AND SPF OPTIONS
Now that the beauty industry has normalized the use of SPF as an essential part of your everyday routine, we’re banking on more ways to get our fix for UVA and UVB protection. Also, with certain sunscreen ingredients being banned, we’re expecting the industry to shift towards cleaner ingredients that aren’t only good for the body, but for the environment as well. Crossed fingers we’ll be getting more reef- and fish-safe sunscreens, please!
6. MORE CUSTOMIZED FORMULAS
Skincare has never been a one-size-fits-all journey, and it’s no surprise that more brands are taking note. Plus, with many people becoming more open to sharing their various skin concerns and experiences, we’re thinking that individualized routines and formulas, as well as personalized skincare, are going to be bigger in the near future. More options to address what we need? Count us in.
7. UPGRADES, ALTERNATIVES, AND ADDITIONS TO OLD FAVES
And lastly, we can’t forget to mention all the new discoveries and innovative changes we’re bound to see! With pimple patches upgraded to microneedle patches, safer alternatives for retinol like bakuchiol and rosehip oil, as well as getting used to having PHA alongside AHA and BHA, we’re surely in for a ride this year.
