“Ma’am, ayaw nyo po mag pa-rebond?” If you’re a naturally curly haired girl, you’ve heard this question from salon stylists countless times. Let’s face it: silky, straight hair is still a beauty standard in the Philippines. But curly hair—especially curls with natural texture—is rarely celebrated. Well, it’s time to change that.
Much like anything in beauty, the first step to embracing your curls is to learn how to properly care for them. You want to work with your strands, not against them. So, put down the blow-dryer, lock up that straightening iron, and follow these 5 easy ways to bring out the best in your natural curls.
1. CO-WASH AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE
If your skin requires ample hydration, so do your curls. That means less shampooing, more conditioner-washing (also known as “co-washing”). Ideally, you should only use shampoo once a week to avoid drying out your strands. Of course, this is easier done in colder weather. We all know how greasy and sweaty hair can get after just a day under the Philippine heat. But contrary to popular belief, you can keep clean using just conditioner.
The trick is to thoroughly massage your scalp after applying conditioner and during rinsing. Since conditioner doesn’t contain the harsh, purifying agents found in shampoos, it takes a little more manual work to get rid of dirt. But trust us—the extra effort is worth the results.

2. PAT DRY WITH A COTTON SHIRT
Towel-drying is one of the worst things you can do for your hair. Towels are usually made with terry cloth, which is rough on strands, snag on delicate curls, and cause frizz before your hair is even dry. Instead, switch to a microfiber towel or simply a cotton t-shirt. Then—and here comes the crucial part—make sure to pat your hair dry.
Absolutely do not rub or shake through your strands. This will cause friction against the hair shaft and result in frizz later on. Simply push your curls toward your scalp and hold firmly for a few seconds, allowing excess moisture to absorb into the cloth. You can also pat around the top of your head to dry it near the roots.

Want more defined curls? Try plopping. And yes, it’s exactly how it sounds. To do this, simply take a large cotton t-shirt and lay it flat, with the sleeves closest to you. Then, press your head upside down onto the middle of the shirt, so that your strands lie in a pile. This will compress your curls from tip to root and encourage curl definition while they dry.
Next, take the top half of the shirt and bring it over your head. It should now lie flat against the nape your neck. Then, tie the shirt sleeves together to tightly secure everything. Tuck in any loose strands. Now, you have a DIY head wrap! Let your curls sit for 10-20 minutes before removing.
4. AIR DRY YOUR CURLS
Once you’ve plopped your curls and removed the head wrap, all you have to do is let them dry as they are Do not touch your hair while it is air-drying. Touching your hair with bare hands will instantly cause frizz and pretty much ruin all the prep you’ve done up to this point.
So, resist the temptation to micro-manage your curls and put those mitts away! You’d be surprised what a huge difference this makes. Condition, plop, air-dry—that’s it!
5. SLEEP WITH A SILK SCARF OR SILK PILLOW
If you wake up with a tangled, frizzy mane, your pillow case may be the culprit. The cotton fibers rub against your strands and deplete moisture as you sleep. This causes long-term dryness, frizz, and can even worsen any existing damage.
The quick fix? Sleep on a less abrasive material, ideally silk or satin. Their smooth texture creates less friction against strands. We recommend using a silk scarf as a protective head wrap, especially if you’re a restless sleeper. But if that’s too much of a hassle for you, simply wrap a silk scarf around your pillow and sleep with your hair sprawled outwards.
