While it’s easy to admit that we all have a weakness for sugar, the truth behind it is harder to swallow. Don’t deny it: we might know the hazards that come with consuming too much sugar, but more often than not, we brush them off in exchange for a chocolate bar or a slice of cake because sweets are just so darn good.
But what exactly does sugar do to our bodies that makes it the main antagonist of our sweet tooth?

When we consume sugar, whether artificially added or natural, our body reacts by producing insulin to regulate our blood sugar. As the hormone responsible for allowing our bodies to convert sugar into energy, insulin controls the amount of sugar our body releases for energy production and distributes it to our cells when we need it the most. But when we intake more than what our body requires, our body develops insulin resistance. As a result, imbalances in our blood sugar occur, and we become more susceptible to different types of health hazards.

According to studies, excessive sugar intake is often linked to heart diseases, tooth and gum problems, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and cancer. To make things worse, sugar has been reportedly blamed for rapid skin aging, behavorial changes, and depression.

Now you’re probably thinking: how can I eat my favorite desserts now that I know these?

Well, these health hazards might indeed sound scary, but there’s still hope for us dessert lovers to enjoy our favorite sweets without worrying too much about excessive sugar intake. Luckily, more and more low-sugar options have been popping out of supermarket shelves. So instead of opting for original flavors containing more sugars, try picking the ones that are less sweet. Another option is to cut down on artificial sugars and choose natural sugars found in fruits. That way, you’ll get your sweet fix and reap the health benefits from these wonder foods at the same time.

Now that you’re equipped with these tips, try recreating your favorite desserts using healthier alternatives. Below, we give you 5 easy dessert recipes that won’t hurt your teeth and your health!
