One amazing thing about the human body is how well it can take care of itself. Most of the time, all you have to do is make sure it’s fed, clothed, and away from harsh environments, and it’ll function like a well-oiled machine. Your private areas are no exception to this: you just have to clean it well and it shouldn’t be a bother. Easy, right?
Er, not exactly. As with anything that seems like a breeze on the surface, vaginal care is a minefield of possible slip-ups. Worst case scenario, these could even lead to some serious health problems. To help you avoid that, we put together a list of 5 common feminine hygiene mistakes you might be making. Read up and stay healthy, ladies!
MISTAKE #1: USING NON-BREATHABLE UNDERWEAR
As luxurious as silk and lace panties may be, they tend to retain a lot of moisture. This makes them a prime environment for yeast and other bacteria to grow, which can lead to various infections.
THE FIX: Go for fabrics like cotton, as they’ll help keep your intimate areas cool and dry no matter how humid your environment may get.
MISTAKE #2: WEARING THE SAME SANITARY PAD FOR TOO LONG
Ladies, if you think you can get away with wearing the same pad throughout the day just because your flow is light, think again! All that does is encourage bacterial growth in your menstrual blood.
THE FIX: Whether you’re on your first or last day, be sure to change your sanitary pad every 3-4 hours to avoid any trouble. Of course, if your pad fills up before that, change even sooner!
MISTAKE #3: WIPING YOURSELF TOO ROUGHLY
While every girl knows to wipe after urinating to minimize unsanitary messes, sometimes we might clean ourselves too harshly. This practice could lead to micro cuts and irritations if you’re not careful.
THE FIX: Reach for only soft tissue paper and dab (not swipe!) your lady parts lightly. Your vulva is quite sensitive, so you’ll want to be extra gentle with it.
MISTAKE #4: REUSING A DULL RAZOR BLADE FOR SHAVING
If you regularly shave down there, then taking a razor to that area for upkeep probably won’t give you pause. But using a dull razor is a different story: it can lead to small cuts and ingrown hairs!
THE FIX: Whether you’re using a disposable razor or a reusable one, switch to a fresh blade after every ten uses (or fewer!) to keep shaving smoothly.
MISTAKE #5: NOT USING THE RIGHT SOAPS
On its own, your vaginal area is a balanced ecosystem where good bacteria lives to keep your pH in check. A healthy range is between 3.5 to 4.5, but sometimes this can be thrown off, such as when you’re on your monthly cycle. Common symptoms of an unbalanced pH include itchiness and unpleasant odors, which can’t simply be remedied with basic soap.
THE FIX: First off, there are plenty of antibiotics at the drugstore that can help re-balance your vaginal flora. As always, make sure to do your research or consult with your OB-GYN first before attempting to self-medicate, especially if this is your first rodeo. Second, go for a feminine wash that’s specifically formulated to be within the right pH range so as not to aggravate your symptoms further. Many of them even come scented to take care of bothersome smells, and they’re harmless as long as you use them in moderation. It’s one sure way to feel fresh all day!
