We all have a tub of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly stashed at the back of our medicine cabinets—but it isn’t what you’d consider a kikay-kit essential. You’ll be surprised, however, at what the classic cream can do. From removing a day’s worth of makeup to treating a scar, petroleum jelly can remedy a slew of beauty dilemmas—and all for dirt cheap! Here, we list 20 unexpected ways you can use the stuff:

1. MASCARA
If you want full and fluttery lashes without wasting too much mascara, coat them with jelly. (It’s even rumored to help your lashes grow!)

2. BROW GEL
Got unruly brows that go every which way? Brush a little jelly through them with a spoolie to set those strands straight.

3. HAIR SERUM
Apply the jelly to the ends of your hair to conceal split ends, control flyaways, and tame frizz.

4. MAKEUP REMOVER
When you find yourself in a pinch, petroleum jelly will substitute nicely for makeup remover. Use it to wipe off waterproof mascara, eyeliner, and even falsies and leftover lash glue. You won’t have to pull or tug your skin to get the job done.

5. STAIN REMOVER
If your face paint gets on places it shouldn’t, apply the jelly to the stain and blot it away with a damp cloth until it fades.

6. HIGHLIGHTER
Score a lit-from-within glow minus the makeup with this dewy-maker. Just apply the jelly to the high points of your face. (Note: This works best for normal to dry skin types.)

7. BODY LUMINIZER
You can also mix equal parts petroleum jelly and liquid highlighter to give yourself an all-over glow! Slick this mixture over your collarbones, shoulders, and shins.

8. FRAGRANCE PRIMER
Dot the jelly over your pulse points before spritzing on your favorite fragrance. The moisturized based will make your scent linger longer.

9. LIPSTICK
Mix the jelly and some cosmetic pigment to create a customized sheer lipstick. You can even used crumbled eyeshadow for this! If you want a more opaque finish, add more pigment.

10. LIP BALM
Coat your lips with jelly to protect and relieve a chapped pout. This will lock in moisture and help speed up the healing process. 11. HAND CREAM
Rub a pea-sized amount of jelly into your cuticles to soften them up and spread a thin layer over your palms.

12. FOOT CREAM
This jelly can also transform cracked heels overnight! Slather a generous amount of the stuff on your feet, and then pull on a pair of socks so things can marinate. In the morning, you’ll have softer, smoother soles.

13. CHAFING CREAM
Apply a small amount of the jelly to areas that are prone to chafing (between your thighs, for instance). This will give the skin a little more slip and help prevent redness and irritation.

14. LIP & BODY SCRUB
If you like a good scrub-a-dub, you can mix the jelly with sugar to create your own lip scrub. To make a body scrub, mix it with sea salt!

15. MOISTURIZER
It isn’t as luxurious as your regular moisturizer, but using petroleum jelly works almost as well (especially when you suddenly run out of the good stuff!). Slick it over dry patches for an instant skin quencher.

16. SERUM BOOSTER
Applying the jelly over your eye cream or face serum can double their effectivity. The reason: the extra layer prevents the evaporation of moisture. Just don’t use it over retinol-based formulas (that will make you break out).

17. SUNBURN TREATMENT
If you forgot to use SPF (and don’t we all), apply a generous amount of the jelly over the sunburned area. This will soothe the sting as well as prevent peeling.

18. SCAR TREATMENT
So you hurt yourself by accident—now what? Apply a thin layer of jelly over the wound to minimize its appearance. This can even prevent a scar from forming in the future!

19. HAIR DYE PROTECTOR
Before you color your mane, slick the jelly over your hairline to prevent the dye from seeping into your skin. Otherwise, you’ll end up with an accidental halo.

20. NAIL POLISH PROTECTOR
Apply a thin layer of jelly on the edges of your nails to catch any polish spillover. This will cut your clean-up time in half since you can just wipe your mistakes away!
